  1. What is it about those wick pins! I have the same question. Also, what if you have a strange shaped mold like a star shape? How do you prepare those wickless? And, my wick pins for my votives don't cover the entire bottom of the mold, there is a very small space around the edges, is this a bad thing? I so badly want to use wick pins!
  2. Thanks Michi, I do believe that my wicks are too big. I just ordered a sample wick pack from peake to conduct tests. What is a FMP?
  3. Does this also apply to pillars, and if so, how do you secure the wick to the candle? It sounds like it is easier than wicking. I may have to buy one.
  4. I have seen wick pins advertised online and I really have no idea how to use them. Are the wicsks inserted into the holes created by the pins? Do you have to melt wax around the inserted wicks to keep them in place? Can someone please enlighten me? Is this something good to use?
  5. I am attempting to make cut and curl candles. I am using 1343A wax from peake candles. No additives. First, my dye is not clinging to the candles when dipped. I made a star candle with plain wax no color. What tempurature should the hot wax be? What tempurature should the water dip be? Also, my curls are breaking. Is there some type of additive that needs to be added to my wax to increase its elasticity? Does anyone have general instructions for someone who is interested in this as purely a hobby? What type of wax, additives, tempuratures, dyes, etc? I really could use some help and would really like to pursue this for fun.
  6. I have made several container candles that because of not measuring my FO and testing (beginner's mistake) they don't give off a nice scent throw. How can I reuse the wax? I hot glued the wicks to the glass. Can they go in the oven? Are the wicks going to be useless afterwards? Should I scoop them out and try again or consider them a lost cause? Please help.
  7. Thanks for all of your suggestions. The wick was smoking because it was too long. I cut it and it burned clean. I have great melt pools, so my wicks seem good. Looks like I am going to need a scale to measure this stuff. After burning my candles, although they smell nice unlit, you bearly smell anything when they are lit. Live and learn
  8. That might be it! the flames are huge and it stopped smoking after 30 minutes. It has what appears to be a nice pool. But I think my wick is too long.
  9. I am new to candlemaking. Unfortunately, I didn't think to measure my stuff until after joining this website. I used single pour container wax IGT 4630A from peakecandle.com with no additives (they said it needed none) (I also got my wicks there) and Fresh cut roses FO from candlewic.com. I just kind of poured the FO in until it smelled nice. That is all that is in it. The flames are big and the smoke stopped after 30 minutes. Any ideas.
  10. I am totally new to candlemaking and after reading your threads I realized that I had never tested any of the materials that I was so anxiously using to make container candles. I have made a 5 oz candle in an apothecary jar and when I tried to light it I am getting a lot of black smoke from the flame. I am using 44-32-18 zinc core pre tabbed wicks. what could be causing the black smoke? Please help:confused:
  11. I like the sand candles that are half candle half sand covered. The tops are candle and the bottom are sand. The man on youtube melted the sand from the top and molded it. It was beautiful. Do you have any pictures of yours Donita, all of your stuff are great! I'd love to see your interpretations.
  12. I am interested in making sand candles. I saw a man on youtube make a really nice one. Does anyone else make sand candles?
