  1. The scales I have will weigh in either gms or oz. I'm not sure if different scales weigh the oz differently (i.e. 1.25 oz or 1 1/4 oz) but mine weigh in fractions. If you have a number of say, 0.83 oz of FO (again this is just an example) how would you measure this, change to fraction or would you just convert this to gms and go by the gms number? :tongue2: Hope someone can understand my mumble jumble and help me out. TIA

  2. Ok I punched the numbers into the lye calculator on the sage and it come up with this:

For the size of fat batch that you are using, we recommend that you use approximately 8 to 12 fluid ounces of liquid.

Is this the amount of water I should use? And what number should I use, the high one or low one? And what difference does it make using high versus low number?

And for the lye these are the numbers that come up:

    0 4.75

    1 4.70

    2 4.65

    3 4.61

    4 4.56

    5 4.51

    6 4.46

    7 4.42

    8 4.37

    9 4.32

    10 4.27

How do I know which one to use?:embarasse

    Thanks for bearing with me.

  3. I had some swingin eggnog FO from Peaks and didn't find the hot throw very strong (in 4786 wax) and someone had said maybe it wasn't mixed enough. How long do you stir the FO for? I always heat the wax to the pouring temp, add FO, stir for a little bit (30 secs - 45 secs) and then pour. Should I heat to pouring temp, add FO, stir for a certain amt of time and pour or should I heat to a higher temp, add FO and stir until it reaches pouring temp? I'm just worried about burning off the FO. TIA

  4. On the weekend I poured some 4630 to test it out. I didn't have to do a repour as tops were smooth. The only problem was one container (an 8 oz jj) had a small slit on top which turned out to be what I am thinking is a sink hole (according to the search that I did and found this which was posted by Candleman) It was a small hole about the size of a dime right below the surface (and slit) which I found out after I lit it. Does it sound like a sink hole and if so what do I do to prevent it next time? Hope this rambling makes sense.

"There is some confusion going on here about Sink Holes & Air Pockets.

Sink Hole - That is what you get at the top of the candle (bottom if it's a piller) and you can see it around the wick or wick pin. This you just top off with wax.

Air Pockets - These are pockets of air, or large air bubbles, formed inside the candle, usually around the wick or wick pin, and you can not see them. These you poke relief holes around the wick area and re-pour with wax. You can usually feel when you hit one.

Air pockets happen when a candle cools to fast, not all waxes will have them or as severe. To avoid them cool the candle slowly. There are many ways to do this, place jar candles in a warm oven for a few hours then turn off oven and let candle finish cooling in the oven. Place jar candles back into their boxes they came in. Wrap towels around them. Place into an ice chest or place a foam chest over the candles, and the list go on.

In the summer (in a pouring area without temp. control) I find the pouring room warm enough and don't get air pockets.

IMO - I always (even in the summer) poke to check for air pockets because I can't see them and want to insure I sell a quality product.

  5. I haven't hosted anything like this but I would think coffee/tea, hot apple cider, and punch would be good along with cheese/crackers and veggie tray. I would only serve wine if it was an "intimate" so to speak open house, (close friends and family). I don't think you are being cheap, like you said they should be there for the product, not food. I think what you have planned sounds good unless your DH/DS want to splurge and pay out of their pocket for the wine. :laugh2:;)

  6. I poured a sample of Peak's Pink Sugar today and while I was pouring it I noticed there was a clump of something that looked crystal-like. Anyone ever had this. My sample is over a year old so would that maybe be the problem?

  7. Does anyone notice a big difference with the hot throw between single and double wicked containers?

I am using a 10 oz apoth with double wicks 36-24-Z (just testing 1286 wax right now) and going by the burn time calculator on here I will get approx. 20 hrs burn time.:shocked2: Needless to say I want longer burn time then that so I am going to try single wicking (didn't have much luck before when I tried but will try again). I am also waiting to get some 4786 to test for burn time with double wick and also going to try single wicking with it too. (I am also going to manually time how long it burns to see if there is much difference).

Just when you think you have something going good...... ! (I had good scent throw, clean burn)
