I agree. When I first started making candles I used any old scent. Quickly discovered you could end up turning the candle into a liquifying blow torch or that they would smell absolutely gorgeous when they were just made but as soon as they set there was absolutely no smell to them whatsoever. I would stick with good quality FO.

You use less FO in paraffin wax than you do with Soy. The wax just can't hold that amount of scent (it leaks out of the candle). I would suggest using 1/2 that amount. You can always add more but can't take it out.

Although some scents will need more or less.

It depends, I use stearin and vybar together sometimes as stearin really aids the candles release from the moulds but tend to find if I am making a really dark candle the mottling that stearin causes is really noticeable so I just use vybar.

Just down to personal choice I suppose, I don't really have a preferance.

The scent I was using was Angel Type. I love the perfume and love the candles smelling of them but it is a real bugger trying to get the scent and wax to combine and not leak. It is a really dark coloured FO and I don't know why but the darker FO's tend to need less used and are harder to combine. Just whisk, whisk, whisk.

Ah, this was with adding vybar - really just one particular scent that does it I have to put hardly any in at all or it ends up a really greasy mess. And I have to beat the wax like mad to get it to blend.

Well I got this lovely candle that just oozed scent - and I mean oozed scent. It leaked out the candle and made it into one lovely slippy mess - really horrible, really horrible - smelled okay though but not any stronger than the next one I made using less scent.

Ran straight down to Tesco and got my lovely scales. Brought them home then had to run out again to get a 9 volt battery - checked the box but it didn't say any batteries required - pretty chuffed with them I can tell you.

I poke 4 relief holes around the wick however I keep going back and doing more to keep the holes open.

Mind if you are using Paraffin wax you will need to use less (go on ask me now I know!!!)

Where did you get your scales for £7.00. That is an excellent price. I weigh my FO in a saucer I use for the oils (you wont be able to use it for anything else after that).

Hi all,

How do you finish off your hurricane candles. I find that the inside of the candle isn't very smooth what does everyone else to to get a nice smooth finish.

all different candles mainly votives at the minute but was just looking for general all round ideas:D

I don't wrap up votives - too small and fiddley - I sometimes put them in organza bags for weddings and things. Pretty much everything else goes in cellophane bags or wraps. I am looking into plastic tubing but this will need to wait until I have enough money.

I tend to use Cellophane bags tied with ribbon and a gift tag. I stick a label with the scent and company info on it.

You only want to put about 1/2 oz in 135 MP paraffin anyway, unless you're using Vybar or some such thing.

I didn't know that, that explains why if I try to put anywhere near 1oz FO into my paraffin wax the candle sweats! I thought I was doing something wrong.

You could always test burn one of the other ones you made!

Or mention to your hubby's friends that you have only tested a couple so if they have any problems to let you know. You could kill 2 birds with the one stone so to speak sell a couple of candles and get them to test them for you at the same time.

Thanks for that. I do tap the mould. Well I actually really bash it with a teaspoon to try and get the airbubbles out but these tiny little pests resist my best attempts.

Does anyone know what is causing this. I get tiny holes at the top of my candle (would be the bottom in the mould). It happens most with the poly carbonate moulds. I make sure the moulds are clean, I warm them first, I have tried pouring the wax cooler and warmer but I still get these tiny bubbles. They aren't very noticeable at all but because I can see them they bother me.

well not a secrety hippy, but I do burn incense (for mediumistic purposes). My hairdresser is a goth and expressed her concern at not being able to get black candles anywhere other than those bleeding rose? taper ones.

So....... I thought make her a purple chunk with black overpour in nag champra, after I've burned about 3-4 myself (purely for testing purposes )

Yep the Nag Champa is good, not too over powering.

I got black dye chips from Full Moons Cauldron. You need to use quite a lot but you get quite a good black.

I also got another really good black. I was actually going for a dark green but whatever I did mixing the liquid yellow, red and blue I got black - don't ask me how but I did.

Nat I will be needing Paraffin wax too soon, how much is it for a 25kg bag. I find you get better value buying 25kg.

Im a newbie from Scotland to and agree 100% with you on the fantastic variety of scents available everywhere else it seems but SCOTLAND......... sorry nearly got me started there:-) I'm always looking at websites and thinking is it worth it, with the rate of exchange etc, but guess what i have never done it yet. Maybe one day. I also bought scents from Joe at Sensory Perfection and they were great, and there is always a wee surprise to:-)

I have also used fullmoon-cauldron for various supplies, but i have not tried there scents. As said by others " there a wee bit on the pricey side" but they are very helpful, offered good customer services and quick delivery.

Just sitting here thinking about us poor sods in scotland, Correct me if im wrong somebody please, but i dont think there is a single candle supplies company in scotland. Is there????????????????????

I haven't found a single supplier in Scotland. I used to get my supplies from Alan at Candleicious but he has had to close because of the b*****d banks as he puts it. He was excellent - if I was stuck could always bend his ear for an hour or two.

I know it is annoying being stuck in the back of beyond when it comes to candlemaking supplies because it costs an absolute fortune to get your delivery particularly when you take into account the weight of the bags of wax we need.

Anyway enough of that before I put myself in a downer on this lovely sunny Easter Friday.

I'm after a square metal one' date=' about 4inch diameter and preferable 6inch tall although 4inch tall would be ok. I need to get some nag champra fo (seen it somewhere) and also looking for a plastic/as in see through round mould about 4-6inch diameter and same height to do a hurricane photo in, cant get the piccies straight if I can't see.

They are pricey but I can't find metal moulds like that anywhere - they can charge what they want I suppose if they have the market cornered!!
