  1. My boss was upset that I was charging $10.00 for my candles. He said, "you can get one just like that for a dollar at the dollar store." So at Christmas everyone in the office got one of my awesome smelling candles and he got one from the dollar store. No, not really but the thought sure did cross my mind! :D

Anyways, I am dealing with a similar issue, but different. :embarasse A girl I recently met at work tried one of my candles and now wants to go into business with me. I told her some things I now regret. She kind of put me on the spot in a way because I had not decided that I wanted a partnership, and I did'nt want to offend her if I did. We talked about it and she said that it would be o.k. with her if I wanted to be sole proprieter and have her do all the marketing as an employee. I told her we needed to have a long talk if we did go partnership because I felt uncomfortable giving out my secrets. Yes, I put it to her point blank! :waiting: I was uneasy about telling her all my secrets. :lipsrseal But when she would ask, I felt bad for wanting to hold back. At first with her it was o.k., no problem, I understand. Needless to say she has a few accounts that are really wanting my candles and now she is pushing for partnership with 50/50 split. Now how do you do that fairly? I had given her over 20 candles to try and promote business at a few places where she did some business of her own. Well some of the candles disapperared and she got offensive when I asked for the list I had given her. She said she had lost it. She finally called me back with the list but there were still three that I remember giving het she did not account for. She started naming my candles and wanting to change the formula because she had some 50/50 wax sitting around her house unused. She got uptight because I didn't like her jar choices when she went searching for jars on the internet. I felt like I was being taken over. :bump: I feel so cheated and have'nt even entered in to the partnership yet. I don't want to now, but don't know how to tell her.

    Sorry, I too am venting!

  2. Does anyone have Limited Liability Coverage along with regular insurance coverage? Is it a good idea to have both? I heard that your personal assets can still be attacked with LLC but only after the business assets have been attacked first. In my case, just starting out , I have no business assets.:grin2:

    Thanks!

  3. I am looking at starting a candle business and would like to know some of the Have To's to get going. I know I still need insurance and to register my name. Where do I go to do this? If I have a name for a candle that is not being used, like my own made up name, should I or could I register it? Any other helpful information would be greatly appreciated!

    Thank You!:)

  4. I had a few questions regurding craft shows and flea markets. I am wanting to try a few but have no idea what to start with. Does anyone do outside events? And if so, what type of covering (tent?) do you use? How about a sign? Also any advice on the number of candles to take as well as different scents. I am completely new at this and am just fishing around for some advice. Won't be doing them for awhile, any advice would be helpful.

    Thanks! ;)

  5. I was wondering, is there really a market out there for candles? :undecided I LOVE to make candles but before I make any major decisions, I would like to know if any of you have luck selling them and if so, where? I was also wondering about the future of candles? Are they here to stay, or just a fad? Any input?

    Thanks!:smiley2:

  6. Haven't had any problem with these wicks leaning in a liquid melt pool any more than any other wick would. If the candle is liquid all the way down to the wicktab, any wick might lean or collapse if bumped. I don't find that the melted soy wax is ever exactly thin, especially in a melt pool. Always seems kinda viscous to me, but thick or thin, the CDN wicks don't lean during a burn from what I have observed. We use CDN wicks almost exclusively both for palm and soy candles (only exception are our molded palm wax novelty candles).

Awesome! :yay: Thank you. I will try these.

  7. Jodi, we have only used 1.5 oz. rarely... my general rule of thumb is that if a FO doesn't throw well at 1 oz. per pound, I find a better FO. I use CDN wicks for C-3 and have never had any problem with it drowning out, even when the wick wasn't a good match. As folks have said, the wax isn't the trouble - it's either your choice of wick, FO or possibly the colorant you are using. Test, test, test! Good Luck. :)

HI again! I was looking up CDN wicks. Do these burn standing straight? I have read that they are coreless and flat braided. They do appear to be of high quality from what I have read. I know that soy wax is pretty thin when melted to a complete melt pool, especially if the candle is left burning for a long time. I was concerned about leaning if the melt pool got too deep.

    Thank you
