I have recently experimented with making soy candles and love it. I have run into several problems and did a google search on candle questions. I was led here and have had many of my questions answered. I am considering trying a different wax. I am still not happy with the looks of my soy candles. I hope to learn enough here and maybe be able to start selling someday!

  1. I am filling out my forms for registration here in ohio and I am still stuck with wondering if I should go LLC or individual? Could anyone tell me there preferences and why? Just curious. I really need to make a decision and get the ball rolling. Thanks!
  2. How about having gift shops or other shops in other states sell you items? Do you collect sales tax?
  3. Thank you Ginger and Stella for the great advice! :highfive: Jodi
  4. My boss was upset that I was charging $10.00 for my candles. He said, "you can get one just like that for a dollar at the dollar store." So at Christmas everyone in the office got one of my awesome smelling candles and he got one from the dollar store. No, not really but the thought sure did cross my mind! Anyways, I am dealing with a similar issue, but different. :embarasse A girl I recently met at work tried one of my candles and now wants to go into business with me. I told her some things I now regret. She kind of put me on the spot in a way because I had not decided that I wanted a partnership, and I did'nt want to offend her if I did. We talked about it and she said that it would be o.k. with her if I wanted to be sole proprieter and have her do all the marketing as an employee. I told her we needed to have a long talk if we did go partnership because I felt uncomfortable giving out my secrets. Yes, I put it to her point blank! I was uneasy about telling her all my secrets. :lipsrseal But when she would ask, I felt bad for wanting to hold back. At first with her it was o.k., no problem, I understand. Needless to say she has a few accounts that are really wanting my candles and now she is pushing for partnership with 50/50 split. Now how do you do that fairly? I had given her over 20 candles to try and promote business at a few places where she did some business of her own. Well some of the candles disapperared and she got offensive when I asked for the list I had given her. She said she had lost it. She finally called me back with the list but there were still three that I remember giving het she did not account for. She started naming my candles and wanting to change the formula because she had some 50/50 wax sitting around her house unused. She got uptight because I didn't like her jar choices when she went searching for jars on the internet. I felt like I was being taken over. :bump: I feel so cheated and have'nt even entered in to the partnership yet. I don't want to now, but don't know how to tell her. Sorry, I too am venting!
  5. Thanx Deb. I am sorry, I was told that by registering for LLC (oops, I thought it menat LL-coverage ) you could not be sued. It pays to do research. I am planning on getting product liability insurance. Thanks again!
  6. Does anyone have Limited Liability Coverage along with regular insurance coverage? Is it a good idea to have both? I heard that your personal assets can still be attacked with LLC but only after the business assets have been attacked first. In my case, just starting out , I have no business assets. Thanks!
  7. Don't worry I won't tell.:lipsrseal I just poured them last night. I was'nt referring to hot throw. Just cold right now. Although my test candle doesn't throw hot at all either. But it has only been one day. Does curing help cold throw. I was wondering because I can't smell it at all in the container. Thanks everyone for the info!
  8. I just got some Vanilla Sugar FO and was so excited when I smelled it out of the bottle. I made 4- 8oz candles (100% soy) and I cant smell a thing. It is so faint. I swear the oil is watered down. I have never had this problem with any FO before. Is Warm Vanilla not compatable with soy? Anyone know? Thanks.
  9. Hi! I have a few names for some candles that I made up. Is it nessesary for me to trademark these names to use them? If so, how much does it cost per name? Do I have to get an attourney to do it? Any advice would be helpful! Thank you! :smiley2:
  10. Does anyone know if there is a law or regulation on the amount of FO that is to be used in candle making? :embarasse Thanks!
  11. Wow!*faint* That is terrible! Your poor friend. Thank you very much for the info. I will be sure to check these things out. Thanks again!
  12. Thanks everyone. This is a little worse than typical frosting. It almost looks like one side was eaten away where the powdery spot is. Probably because she put the lid on when it was still hot. I will try coconut oil. Looks like a characteristic of soy and nothing really to worry about. Thank you again!
