  1. No I dont use votive pins (not yet anyway). I have been meaning to order some. So I guess it would be much harder to manually place the wick? also, can I use soy votive wax for both chucks as well as fill?
  2. ooooooh I really like the sound of those chunk candles.....but sounds a little too advanced for me. Does the white still turn pink with those? Do u have a pick of them for me to see how they look? This idea sounds great....I plan on working on some tomorrow and would love to know what I have to do. THANKS!
  3. Hi...I am so new to making candles and I have a ton of questions (as Im sure you have noticed! lol)...I have only made tealights and a couple tarts so far, but I would really like to make white and red layered votives and use the scent candy cane and I want all the layers to smell the same. Will I have to use white dye to color the white layers, or can I just use regular wax. Does the FO ever make the white, "not so white"? How long do I allow the first layer to cool before pouring the next layer? Should I make 2 complete batches of melted wax because one is to be white and the other red? Any suggestions will be appreciated. TIA
  4. awesome job!! where did you get those molds? I am getting married and my sister is getting married the year after so those wedding cake candles would be awesome!!
  5. wow...thats such a great idea....I cant wait to go shopping (we have no candle making supplies anywhere near this town!!) THANKS!!
  6. Can you use any of the Wilton candy molds for canles? There are some really cute ones that I thought would be great for tarts. Any suggestions?
  7. just curious...would PAM work with the molds?
  8. hi there...are these the type of tart molds you are looking for? http://www.thecandlesource.com/catalog/i485.html these are the ones I have, but I find it difficult to get the tart out without breaking a small part off the edge. I am looking for just plain round tart molds....anyone know where to find those? joni
  9. thanks....thats exactly what my tea-lights look like...is there anything i can do to prevent it? Because I read that it happens due to puring at too high of a temperature, but when i poured at a cooler temperature, the tops were really lumpy. Just trying to fumble my way through, I dont know anyone else who makes candles.
  10. I am working on my tealights and felt I was doing good....but now I have "frosting" on the tops. I know I have seen this term before but have no idea what it is or how to prevent it.
  11. So its me again. I am trying to order more wax because I must definately have bought the wrong type. I absolutely cannot get the candles out of the molds without breaking them all up. So yes I am feeling quite frustrated with my new hobby at the moment. And I dont plan on giving up because I have already spent WAY too much money. So my new problems lie with not having a clue what type(s) of wick to purchase...I am looking at many charts but not understanding what the difference in them all are. Most seem to be identified by numbers...wondering if the numbers actually represent anything so I will know the difference between them? And all the letters as well? I feel like I am sinking here.... like I have no clue!!! joni
  12. Thanks guys....I do however have a couple questions to continue with my "works of art".... **keep in mind that I am trying to be very basic at this point!! lol**** how long should candles sit in the mold before removing them? i have already tried to remove them (maybe it was too early?...i made them this afternoon) and I absolutely could not get them out of the mold...i tried freezing them for a few minutes, i presprayed them with a little pam (i read that often helps with new molds) but no luck. So I left them there. What is the best temperature to use for pouring the wax? I bought soy wax and the instructions that came with it said to pour at 90-100 degrees F...but that seemed WAY too cool....the wax was sooooo thick and they looked quite ugly on top....I ended up reheating some of the wax to try again. How much of the dye bar do you use for 1 lb of wax? The bar says that it will color up to 35 lbs of wax so I only cut off a very small piece of brown. While the wax was liquid, the color looked really dark, but when it cooled, it was a very light tan color. I am sorry about asking all these questions to you guys but I have searched the internet and have found no luck. I would really really appreciate your help here. Thanks!! Joni
  13. Wow....I just made my first batch of candles ever!!! I kept VERY simple, just some tea lights, tarts, and a couple of votives. I followed the directions from the wax provider (i am using the soy blend) but I think the temp they suggest to pour at are too low because my candles look lumpy on top. I reheated some of the wax and poured a couple more which look great so far. They are not cooled enough yet to take them out of the molds, but I plan to make another batch tomorrow and hopefully they will look much better. I am so excited joni
  14. Hi there...My name is Joni and I have never made candles before. I am determined to do this because it is something that I have always loved, but I have no idea. I am in the process of trying to order supplies, and frankly, I have no idea what I should be buying as a beginner. I want to include color and fragrance, but I have no idea how much of each I need. Any help would be greatly appreciated... Thanks
