  1. what type of wick do you use for the 4oz tins.....i've been making them every now and then since around march i think, and i still haven't found a good wick yet.....mine mushroom up real bad.
  2. Hey ya'll I remember seeing a thread on here about tins.....I just thought I'd let ya know I found a really good site. Its at http://www.mountainroseherbs.com. It is the cheapest place I've found so far for tins....for a 4oz tin they want .85 or you can get 100 of them for $75, which is 75 cents, or you can get 500 for $331 which comes out to 66 cents a tin. but who has an extra $331 laying around? LOL I'm doing more searches for them so if I find another cheaper place, I'll post it here.
  3. Ok ya'll, I know I just got into this candle making thing. But I just thought of something tonight.......Do I have to have some sort of license to sell candles?? I don't plan on doing a lot of selling, just to friends and some coworkers and maybe a few others, but I don't plan on doing any major selling! So I was just wondering about that. And also, I just realized I should probably have my name or a business/company name on the candles and I'm going to put my phone number on it. But I don't really want MY name on it and I'm having heck of a time coming up with a name....but heres what I came up with so far......I have a 6 month old son named Cameron...and what I had intended to do with the money I made from the candles.after I've paid for supplies and all that......I plan on putting half of everything I make in his savings account.....So I came up with "Cameron's Candles" I just thought it kinda sounded good together, I guess cuz they both start with "C" but I want other's peoples opinions......How did you come up with names for your candles? Alright I got to go check on my candles I just made.
  4. ok ya'll thanks for the advice, i did see the cotton wicks i wanted on moonglow, but the shipping cost more than the wicks do, so i'm definitely not getting them from there. i guess i will try the lx series wicks, and i'll get the 14-16-18 size like someone suggested. i just found out that there is a craft store about an hour away from me, so i'm going to go there tomorrow to see if they have the wicks i want. and i will take all your advice and not sell anymore candles, i didnt intend to sell the candles i took to work with me anyways, its just that some people wouldnt take no for an answer, and i told them they could just have them and let me know what they thought, but they insisted on paying me, so i think what i'll do in return is maybe for everyone who bought if they want another one i'll give them a free one with their order! but like i said before they burned much better when i trimmed the wick shorter, it took longer for the mushroom to build up and it wasn't as bad as before.....ok now i have one more question.....i have 31 candles here already made.....what should i do with them?? is it possible to melt them and repour them with new tins and wicks? cuz i really dont want to sell them like that. but i dont want them to go to waste either! any advice would be greatly appreciated.....oh yeah one more questions......do candles have to have warning labels on them to sell them???? I didnt put warning labels on them but i made my own labels to put the scent on and said to keep wick trimmed to 1/4" for best results, and to put on heat resistant surfaces and to keep away from pets & children, is that good enought or do i need an actual warning label. I got that idea from my MIL she buys candles from someone and their label for the candle name she put something like that on there, so i figured that would be easier to do than making my labels then getting other warning labels to put on too. well my 6 month old is wanting attention so i better get off here.
  5. well they are the ones who wanted to buy from me even tho they knew my wicks weren't ready!! i have noticed, i messed around with some candles today and if i keep the wick trimmed really short there is a lot less mushrooming and it didnt affect the wick drowning or anything either, but yes i am going to invest in some different wicks. does anyone know where i can get 44-24-18-c at???? i've heard that one would be good for my tins, but can't find them anywhere, i've checked all the suppliers that i've found on here in the boards. im going to try some lx18 and htp73 too, just sucks that i'm going to have to wait about a week to get them!
  6. yes i'm selling, but not to everyone, just friends and they know about the wick problem and said they won't mind it til i get it fixed!
  7. ok the tins i get from ebay. $10.50 for 25 of them which averages 42cents each, cheaper than anywhere else i've found, almost every place i've seen wants them for at least 60cents or more. the wicks i was using came from the candle source it didnt say what size they were just medium pre tabbed zinc core wicks 5.75" and for those of you who seem to be making fun of me for selling candles so quickly since i just started making them.....i have test burned all of my candles, but everyone that i was showing them too really loved them and wanted to buy them even tho i wasn't ready to start selling yet.......i'm only selling them to certain people for now because of the wick problem, and i warned them of it, but they said they wouldn't mind the wicks. I told them I'm working on the wick problem and would let them know when i got it fixed, then i'll start selling to other people. I had a lady i work with test every single candle i've made so far of each scent, and she absolutely loves them, she said they were better than the home & interior candles shes been buying....sooooo they must be good cuz everyone loves them
  8. the EZ soy one pour wax comes from creative candle supply.....i think its new, and its actually the only soy wax that i have found thats not in flakes! which i thought was kinda weird, but i really like it and my candles have turned out excellent, other than the wicks doing that. i need help on finding wicks cuz im new to this candlemaking stuff and i have no idea what kind of wick to use!
  9. i started making candles a few months ago, now im starting to sell them to coworkers. i make the candles in 4oz tins and am selling them for $4.00 each, is that too high? or too low or just right? lol if i figured it up right, its costing me $2.14 to make each candle. i sold 18 candles in 2 days, and that was just a couple people one person loved my candles so much & couldnt decide on what she wanted so she got one of each scent! and what wicks do u use in 4oz tins? i am having so much trouble with the wick looking like a mushroom, my scent throw is really awesome, but i hate when the wick balls up after burning. right now i been buying most of my supplies on ebay, and i think i just ordered the same wicks by mistake cuz i couldnt remember where i got the first wicks i bought lol oh and i am using EZ Soy pour wax, that comes in slabs and not flake form...if that helps any. thanks
  10. hey ya'll just wanted to say my candles turned out excellent! well at least the blueberry cheesecake did....i live in a 2 story house and i can smell it upstairs! it makes my mouth water smelling it!!! heheh:drool: i think i do need to use different wicks though the top of them kind of turn into a little black ball and smoke really bad when you blow it out.....im using a zinc core wick....any ideas on what kind of wick i should use????
  11. What does HTH stand for???? i've read that a couple times on these message boards and can't figure that one out LOL
  12. Did you use the EZ Soy Flakes? I'm using the CCS1275-EZ Soy Pour, it came in an 11 lb slab.
  13. Hi all, I've been reading post on here for a few weeks now trying to learn more about canlde making.......I started with a paraffin wax that came with a starter kit and all the candles turned out really good.....i decided to try the EZ Soy wax that is a one pour last night but not sure how them candles turned out yet......but i was just wondering what temp do you put the fragrance oil and dye in at????? this wax didn't come with any instructions like the parrafin did and it just said on the package to pour at 155....i have one of those presto melters with the spigot and decided to let the temp get to 170 before i poured it in the pouring pot so that it would give me time to get the dye and fragance in before reaching 155, so i'm hoping they turn out ok...and also how long do i need to wait to burn the soy candles? i've heard 48 hrs and a week....but im going nuts cuz i just want to burn them now! i made a bunch of differnet kinds, peanut butter cookies, chocolat chip cookies, lilac, blueberry cheesecake.......and i forget what else! but i made over 30 candles last night! i was busy!!!! hehe but any advice would be great! thanks
