This was my first batch made from this lot of wax. Oh me I hope it isn't the wax. I'll be pouring up some that I know throw well soon so maybe that will tell me.

It's not the wax. The apple started to throw better. It was stronger in the larger wick I tested but that one was sooting and too hot. Going to do a test with the smaller wick and increase my FO to 10%

I've never had that problem with Aztec oils.  They are some of my favorites.  Like all places, some will be powerhouses, some will be more subtle.  (Although, even though I haven't tried their Macintosh, I do have several other apple scents from them and they throw well for me.  Anecdotally, there have been several posts here in the last year or two saying that 6006 isn't what it used to be.  Are you getting good throw with other oils with that same batch of 6006?)

This was my first batch made from this lot of wax. Oh me I hope it isn't the wax. I'll be pouring up some that I know throw well soon so maybe that will tell me.

  3. Love this scent bought from Aztec. Poured up some test candles and melts using 6006. The oil smells amazing but I'm getting very little cold throw and trying the melts and they aren't throwing like I'd like. I started with 9% so can't raise it much. Anyone else had any trouble with this scent or could it be something I've done?

  4. Thanks all!  I ordered some wax from a different supplier and thought the lot number would be on the cases, but it wasn't. I ordered 10 lbs. below the full case size and I don't know if they gathered all from the same lot. I'll just have to test each block. Next time I'm getting the full case and saving myself all this testing time.

I've actually started playing with an 80/20 464/4627 bend. I dont mind soy and its easier to work with than paraffin. (Plus I have a lot of both waxes) I'm side by side burning a pure 464 and a 464/4627 right now and they can burn well past the 3 hour mark without the slighest hint of a flame problem. HOWEVER. Neither are scented. And I  know your oil changes this A lot. The pure 464 has an HTP 126 and the mix has a 105. the 105 is tunneling slightly, I'm thinking with oil it may be enough or even too much of a wick. The 126 gets a very small wall to wall pool which is pleasing visually. I have not checked temp tho. At this point with these 2 I'm kinda just enjoying watching them burn.

4627 is a high scent wax as I understand, and adding tht 20% smoothed out the rough sandpapery texture that 464 has when new or when freshly burned. Not being 6006 means no risk of tunneling (4627 is like vaseline its.. SUPER goopy..)

Poured a scented and dyed sample saturday, will test it in 2 weeks. It's already frosting, so.. might have to go dyeless on candles. (Which I'm ok with to a degree. Would just need to "Rebrand" a bit so to speak..)

Will keep you in the loop!

I also basically went to flaming candle and got 1 of everything wick wise. So.. guess there's more testing.. god I hate testing.

Any updates?  I use 6006 and use premier wicks. They are the only ones I could get to work properly. I do mushroom at times but little to zero sooting.

Testing can be very tiresome. I'm testing right now with 2 new scents. One is throwing great the other is very faint.

It’s very helpful to learn how to baseline test waxes. Unscented in a smallish jar will alert you to any major changes before you get too far into production and get into a pickle.

I’ve had too many lots with significant variances to not baseline test. It’s quick and easy.

So how will I know which wick to baseline test to?  I'm using 6006 and premier wicks but each FO typically requires a different wick. I use 725 and 735 mostly. Should I got with the most common wick and make sure I get a proper melt with minimal soot?

  7. If you order the same type of wax do you retest every recipe with your new batch?  Like if I established a 735 with thos FO in 6006 and my batch of 6006 runs out and I order more. Do you think it's necessary to test every batch?

Thanks for your advice! I'm buying some Premiers today to try - Premier 725/735/745/750/755 Also bought some ECO 2s. Hoping downsizing these will help solve this! If not, I'll probably have to figure out if it's something I'm doing wrong in the process of making/pouring the wax, since I've already tried such a wide range of wicks and sizes with a very similar outcome. I do have an IR thermometer that I've been using. My goal has been to keep the temperature at 140F max. I've heard this is the limit that someone can still safely hold it without dropping it from the heat.

Been there. Premier works best in 6006 from what I've seen. Each FO changes things. Had one that went with 735 and one that tunnels with 750. Test another FO now and 745 and 750 soothing.

CD was the closest I've had to the premier 700 series.

Once upon a time, HTP and CD were compared and found nearly identical.  There’s a sizing comparison chart on this forum somewhere I could search for.  During the supply shortages of 2020-2021-2022 HTP had a change of yarn  supply that altered the burn of some sizes.  Not sure where that ended up with wicks being made now 🤷🏻‍♀️

given the choice between all of them, premier 700 series  have been the most versatile in my veg waxes.

700 series has been working great. 8% fo 8 oz square mason 735 wick

I've used it for clams and also shapes before I learned the difference between a container wax and pillar wax. I still use it for clams and usually add a little bit of a harder wax to it but it does fine on it's own for clams. Like Forrest said, I just pop the clams in the freezer for a few minutes if it doesn't pop right out.

Thanks everyone!  Working on getting my wicking down. Feel good knowing these are smelling great. Gave some for testing and they love them.

Sizing depends on your wax I learned. CDN are CD wicks with an additional chemical soak before priming.

In soy, cdn often are about half way between cd.

in coconut type blends I find they can burn a bit hotter than cd.

Got in touch with another company and they said HTP or premier. I will test cdn and premier next. If I don't like them I'll order htp

Kinda. They burn a tad cooler than the regular CD. There are some older posts where it states that the CDN's are like an in-between. I think it was Talltayl that mentioned a CDN8 would be like a CD7 so to speak.

They have a coating on them that helps burn with the acidity in wax.

I just looked and I purchased mine from Southwest as well as Northstar for the smaller sizes. However, I checked online and it looks like candle cocoon sells the smaller and larger sizes.

As far as Premier, I tested with the 735 and 745. I don't have a 740 but I think that would have worked for what I have.

Edited to add to try a couple of different sizes in CDN...6,7,8 etc.

I just bought me some cdn wicks. I've also bought me some premier wicks. If I can't settle on one of these idk what I'll do. Lol.

The cd6 is so close. I figured getting some if almost everything will be good going forward. Who knows what my next FO will like.

  13. This 6 has sooted very little. I'm not selling them yet and don't intend to keep this FO as a regular.

I think I may pour up a few more with cd6 to give to family to test. I'll then try to buy some cdn and maybe premier. Do the cdn match size to the CD?  Like if the 6 is right there would I use a cdn 6?  I'd test a 6 and 8 I assume?

On premier I'm not sure which size 700 I should use.

Ok good you went for the small wicks. You could try CDN wicks they burn slightly cooler than CDs. I love them. Lx can burn pretty hot.

There are Eco 1 wicks you could try.

    Thanks!

Update:  The eco is a no go. The cd4 is tunneling and idk if it'll catch up. The cd6 has started throwing soot. I was so excited now little bummed.

I've tried cd, lx, and eco. What other options do I have?  HTP? CDN? Premier?  I don't want to use zinc.

I love 6006, and usually use LX wicks with it. I agree the FO completely changes the burn characteristics, so may need to wick up or down depending. Some FO' s are heavy.

Started my first 4 hour burn test today. Getting a great hot throw! Very excited about that. This isn't my favorite scent but feel like I'm getting somewhere.

Eco2 sooting some and hot glass

Cd4 and cd6 both looking pretty good so far. Glass not too hot melt pool close to full at 4 hour mark.

I know I need to keep going but feeling pretty good about the smaller CDs. I like the flame on LX on another test but it tried to tunnel and had a hot flame/glass.

Thanks hoping I can get 1 recipe mailed down.

Not usually. Fragrance are all formulated differently. You need to test top to bottom for every new fragrance.

Thank you!  I didn't know a lot of this when beginning. Hopefully I'll learn as I go. Lol

Hello @Noob82. Yes, you can make wax melts with candle wax and especially any left over wax when making candles. A few minor downsides that I can remember may be that the wax might stick to your molds or they may be hard and not so easy to break into pieces by hand. Maybe some one else will have some good input to share.

Thanks I'm thinking of just using the single cups. So hopefully I'm good to go. Curing 3 for a wick test right now but may pour a few melts when we make our next batch.
