  1. Thanks for the advice. Good idea about photo copying, it'd probs be easier to handle just on paper, but the paper is a dark brown with a flower through it and so i'd imagine it'd take up load of ink of my printer/copier.

I think i'll just try it with wall paper, even if as you say the wallpapers too thick for the light to shine through, the canes can still be used for decoration.

I'll post a pic when i'm done if there half decent.

  2. I've made quite a lot of photo hurricanes and am quite good at them, but i've had an idea on a variation of it and just wanted to see if anyone knew if it would work.

My friends moving in to a new home, she's just been decorating and has done one wall with a lovely feature wallpaper. Theres loads of cut offs to i had the idea of embedding the wallpaper, like how it is done with the photo. But only put it on every side of the square hurricane candle as opposed to just the one side like you'd do in a photo hurricane.

Do you think this is possible? will there be enough time to get four sides in the wax before it starts to set?

Hopefully it'll work, my friend doesn't know i've got the cutoffs(she was throwing them out) so it'll be a nice surprise for her.

  3. I tried making these, but i'm from the uk and not used to working in cup measurments. I think i must of over estimated the glycerine or under estimated the dry ingredients, because they kept their really wet dough consistency, and weeks later have never dried out.

Next time someone makes them would you be able to see what the quantities are in grams so that i can try again but this time weigh them. Thankyou.

  4. What temperature do you all pour your photo hurricanes at?

And what percentage micro hard do you add?

I used to make loads of canes and was quite good at them, but i havn't made any for about a year and i can't for the life of me remember what temperature i used to pour them at or the amount of micro hard. I'm using 5055 hurricane wax.

I had Donita's brilliant tutorial but i lost them all when my old computer died grrrrr.

    Thankyou

  5. Just wanted to share my figuring on Bert's prices. My average cost per ounce WITH shipping was 84 cents per ounce.:yay: Ummmmm..... could someone pinch me please :shocked2: because I must be dreamin'.

    I ordered:

    Angel Type

I've only poured the Pumpkin one so far and waiting on the cure...ewww I hate the waiting. I don't have one complaint on the ones I haven't poured yet. If they are only half as good in my wax as they smell still in the bottle, my pocketbook is in BIG trouble and I mean BIG. And Bert, you will get tired of hearing me say this... THX!

    Just thought I'd share,

    Chantel

Have you poured the angel type yet- would be interested to know what you thought, at that price i am going to order some :smiley2:

  6. After I did the 1st one with the dog memorial one' date=' I decided to try leaving a little bit of blank paper at the bottom, to raise the piccie up a bit, but didn't realise it would be whiter than the cane and stand out, won't be doing it again ;)[/quote']

It's lovely yvette, but if you want to leave a blank piece of paper at the bottom, why not do the same all the way round the sides to that the paper goes to the edge to the front side, that way the bottom bit would not stand out, it would all blend in and you would still have the border

  7. Theres some really nice bears on first and main, i will have to get a shipping quote and see if its worth it, once i have figured in the cost of shipping compared to the cost i can sell them for, i may have to get the ones from first and main though as the ones i am selling at the moment were end of line product, so once they are gone i cant get any more and i cannot find any more in the U.K that are o.k for wax dipping, did find a few but they are either not cute enough or they are too expensive, saw some that would have been suitable but they were $10 per bear! So will have to keep looking.

  8. is there anything specific the bears have to be then? I missed out on a brill auction for some on ebay a while back' date=' went to click buy it now and someone beat me to it, within seconds.

I'm assuming it takes a lot of wax, cos the dipping pan has to be as big as the bear, or can you roll him round in it ;)[/quote']

They have to be stuffed bears, the ones with bean filling dont work. They dont take that much wax, i normally use about a 1lbs to 1 1/2 lbs for a medium size bear. I know there might sometimes be some suitable on ebay, but i want somewhere i can get a regular supply of the same bears. As i am sharting my site soon, it would be easier to have a steady supply of the same ones so i dont have to keep changing the photos. I like the look of some of the ones on US suppliers websites, but i think they would cost too much to ship over.

  9. Anjie, i dont know if you have looked yet but i am finding it difficult finding a supplier to purchase long haired bears from in the U.K that are suitable for dipping. The ones i am currently using i have to buy retail, which means i dont really make money on them, so i need to find a wholesale supplier of them in the U.K.

  10. aah' date=' heat guns, tbh, I'm not sure of buying the right thing. In the UK, we have things called heat guns, that are great big industrial things for stripping paint off wood, but they have a big wide nozzle. I need a smaller nozzle. The heat settings worry me too, whether I get one hot enough.

I'm off to the craft shop tomorrow. Was going today but they have a sale on starting tomorrow ;)[/quote']

I really like them yvette. As for the heat gun in the U.K, when i was looking the builders ones seemed too big and proberly too hot for wax, was scared of melting more than just the wax. But i eventually got a smaller one from

TK MAXX - i think it is meant for cooking but it is plently hot enough for wax, plus i was only £6.99

  11. Hi,

They are rustic pillars made out of regular parrafin wax, you pour the wax cool say 140 and sort of slosh it round the sides and then pour all the way up. You pour it in to a mold that has been chilled to help nachieve the rustic effect. I think that there is instructions for it to the left. I am sure there will be some experts along soon that can offer more help than me.

  12. I havent really been keeping the water bath at any particular temperature, just whatever temp it comes out of the cold water tap at, so will try to get it at 80 to 90 degrees F. Thankyou

Not sure if we can get micro 180- think i have seen it referred to as micro hard and micro soft- would micro 180 be microhard? What does adding micro 180 do?

  13. I have made photo hurricanes before and have come out brilliant. But now all of a sudden they have started to come out with a sort of smudge surface. I remelted it and tried three more times but everytime it comes out with small patches of smudges over the surface of the candle. I am using plain paraffin with translucent crystals added to raise the melt point since i cannot get hurricane wax in the U.K. I am pouring at 175 and sealing the photo with ice, then transfering to the water bath. Any ideas how to rectify this? Please

  14. No, of course i dont mind you can use the candy cane idea. I sold a few- but i wasnt actively selling last christmas, i sold probably about a dozen packs which were just to friends and family who saw them on my tree and wanted some of their own. Would imagine they would sell well, here in the u.k ornies(especially scented ones) are unheard of, think it must be an american thing, so as soon as they saw them they had to have some.
