  1. Thanks for the advice. Good idea about photo copying, it'd probs be easier to handle just on paper, but the paper is a dark brown with a flower through it and so i'd imagine it'd take up load of ink of my printer/copier. I think i'll just try it with wall paper, even if as you say the wallpapers too thick for the light to shine through, the canes can still be used for decoration. I'll post a pic when i'm done if there half decent.
  2. I've made quite a lot of photo hurricanes and am quite good at them, but i've had an idea on a variation of it and just wanted to see if anyone knew if it would work. My friends moving in to a new home, she's just been decorating and has done one wall with a lovely feature wallpaper. Theres loads of cut offs to i had the idea of embedding the wallpaper, like how it is done with the photo. But only put it on every side of the square hurricane candle as opposed to just the one side like you'd do in a photo hurricane. Do you think this is possible? will there be enough time to get four sides in the wax before it starts to set? Hopefully it'll work, my friend doesn't know i've got the cutoffs(she was throwing them out) so it'll be a nice surprise for her.
  3. I tried making these, but i'm from the uk and not used to working in cup measurments. I think i must of over estimated the glycerine or under estimated the dry ingredients, because they kept their really wet dough consistency, and weeks later have never dried out. Next time someone makes them would you be able to see what the quantities are in grams so that i can try again but this time weigh them. Thankyou.
  4. make sure your timing the layers right. I sometimes find if i've left a layer for too long and it's set up too much before i've poured the next layer on top, then it will come apart when cutting.
  5. What temperature do you all pour your photo hurricanes at? And what percentage micro hard do you add? I used to make loads of canes and was quite good at them, but i havn't made any for about a year and i can't for the life of me remember what temperature i used to pour them at or the amount of micro hard. I'm using 5055 hurricane wax. I had Donita's brilliant tutorial but i lost them all when my old computer died grrrrr. Thankyou
  6. There very slightly flared but not as much as some. There the loaf moulds with the waves bottoms.
  7. Hi Yvette, have you got a home bargins near you, they have silicone loaf moulds in for only £1.99 each, and slab and muffin moulds too. I got some plastic loaf moulds from dennycraftmoulds but there such a pita to get the loaf out.
  8. Anjie, don't know if you still need it or not but i use a candle laquer from keith at candelights to seal my decals
  9. Have you poured the angel type yet- would be interested to know what you thought, at that price i am going to order some :smiley2:
  10. Oh thats a shame inez, i was looking forward to trying that wax, they looked amazing.
  11. Theres some really nice bears on first and main, i will have to get a shipping quote and see if its worth it, once i have figured in the cost of shipping compared to the cost i can sell them for, i may have to get the ones from first and main though as the ones i am selling at the moment were end of line product, so once they are gone i cant get any more and i cannot find any more in the U.K that are o.k for wax dipping, did find a few but they are either not cute enough or they are too expensive, saw some that would have been suitable but they were $10 per bear! So will have to keep looking.
  12. Anjie, i dont know if you have looked yet but i am finding it difficult finding a supplier to purchase long haired bears from in the U.K that are suitable for dipping. The ones i am currently using i have to buy retail, which means i dont really make money on them, so i need to find a wholesale supplier of them in the U.K.
  13. Hiya Angie, I find that long haired bears work the best, short haired ones like beanies the wax would just stick to it, whereas the long haired ones, you can fluff the fur back up again.
  14. I really should be making any candles at all this week, i have got to finish writing my thesis, but my 5055 hurricane wax arrived this morning, and i can here it calling me.. make a photo cane to test it out! So will must probably be doing that:smiley2:
  15. Hi, yvette, try istock photo they have some imazing images and clip art. You have to buy credit, but i think if i remember corectly each photo/graphic works out at less than a $ each.
  16. I am in the U.K, so pay a lot more, it $116 for 55lbs of soy plus $16 delivery and parrafin is $100 plus $16 delivery
  17. Hi, They are rustic pillars made out of regular parrafin wax, you pour the wax cool say 140 and sort of slosh it round the sides and then pour all the way up. You pour it in to a mold that has been chilled to help nachieve the rustic effect. I think that there is instructions for it to the left. I am sure there will be some experts along soon that can offer more help than me.
  18. I havent really been keeping the water bath at any particular temperature, just whatever temp it comes out of the cold water tap at, so will try to get it at 80 to 90 degrees F. Thankyou Not sure if we can get micro 180- think i have seen it referred to as micro hard and micro soft- would micro 180 be microhard? What does adding micro 180 do?
  19. I have made photo hurricanes before and have come out brilliant. But now all of a sudden they have started to come out with a sort of smudge surface. I remelted it and tried three more times but everytime it comes out with small patches of smudges over the surface of the candle. I am using plain paraffin with translucent crystals added to raise the melt point since i cannot get hurricane wax in the U.K. I am pouring at 175 and sealing the photo with ice, then transfering to the water bath. Any ideas how to rectify this? Please
  20. I think i am going to go for country kitchen candles - what do you all think? Thankyou
  21. No, of course i dont mind you can use the candy cane idea. I sold a few- but i wasnt actively selling last christmas, i sold probably about a dozen packs which were just to friends and family who saw them on my tree and wanted some of their own. Would imagine they would sell well, here in the u.k ornies(especially scented ones) are unheard of, think it must be an american thing, so as soon as they saw them they had to have some.
  22. Hi, i made some salt dough ornies, last christmas, they were candycane shaped. After i baked them and left to cool. I painted them in red and white stripes using acrylic paint and then dipped them in white wax, scented peppermint. Turned out great, looked lovely on the christmas tree and smelt great too.
