I know people like Jeff Standley will always play the 'what makes you right and I'm wrong' card, and with some things it is true, but there are a lot of things he does that pro's laugh at because they will only work in extremely unique situations like I mentioned at the start, adding FO to 6006 lower than the manufacturers recommendation rarely ever works unless the FO just happens to be one of those that will throw adding it at almost any temp. He think that just because you 'see' it bind to the wax it means that it really has, you and me both know that's not how it 'really' works.

I don't add oil to 6006 at low temps. I've done "test" methods with 464 at low temps but again, not something I recommend.

Most of them are so dumb they don't realize they are doing it wrong. As long as they are following their beloved CandleScience / Standley guides, they will be making pro candles in no time!!! lol

lol, no one ever said it was easy and you'll be pro in no time. ;)

My candles are ending up with large sinkholes and the wax I add to them is not sticking, making it flake off. Any ideas of how I can fix this? I've tried at various different temperatures...

What type of wax are you using? Paraffin is know for sinkholes, just want to make sure you're not using a pillar style wax instead of a container wax.

Flashpoint is only a concern when shipping.

flashing off of volatile aromatics may be a different discussion.

    Exactly.

That's the idea I was going for on the sub reddit. I wanted to know if there was anything to adding these compounds at higher or lower temps.
As for their video I disagree completely.

  5. Just made my first batch with this wax and first impression are not great.
Small sinkholes on top, larger sinkholes inside, tops cooled and looked like orange peels.
Not a great hot throw after 3 days, waiting to test burn the other two at 7-8 days and 14 days.

New Soy/Coconut/Beeswax Blend Waxes Coming Early April

We are having three new waxes for Containers, Pillars, and Tart produced just for us and testing on these has been great! They are being made by a manufacturer who currently only produces for large end users and we are the first to distribute one of their waxes so these are completely new to the market. We will be offering 2lb samples initially to try them out and are very excited about these new blends.

Just got two samples of this and can't wait to test it out.

When I was using Soy, I used CS, Lone Star, Aztec and some others with it.  No particular preference, other than what smelled good to me. I have since stopped using Soy all together. Too much time waiting for it to cure and the number of wicks I had to go through with Soy that it isn't worth it to me. But the biggest problem I had with it was the inconsistency from each batch of wax, and you will read on this forum that it is a common problem. I do love the look of a Soy candle though,  I currently make my own blend using 2281, I also use 4786, and 4627. I still have Lab & Co and some Coco83 that I mess with as blenders when I get bored, but its Paraffin for me. You just can't beat how easy it is to wick, and the great Hot and Cold throw you get after a day.

But hey, Gratz on your video popularity, I think it was your videos that got my wife into the candle business and then I got hooked. Hope its giving you a lot of business.

Thank you so much and congratulations! I love seeing people get something from the videos and creating something meaningful from them.
I really like the ease of use and the overall look of soy to but I would agree. It's such a gamble with what you get in dealing with it that I had to drop it years ago as well. I have a couple scents and a "proven" jor/wick combo that I do make for those that want soy. But other than those I steer clear.

I have not tried the coco83 yet, I hear great things. I am about to order some and get testing.

OOOOPS!!!!!  Ahahah. Yes as a matter of fact I did post the wrong video. One of those days I guess :D  My bad, anyways as far as 93, to me that is still  too big for the small jars I saw you using  in one of your other 6006 video. I thought the jar you were using had a 2 1/2" opening at top and then tapered down slightly. The glass is going to be so hot when it gets down mid way. I just see lots of your followers getting excited thinking they can just copy what they see you making and start selling without knowing they need to test.

I currently use the 104 in the 9oz straight jar which works really well. The jelly jar works nicely but will get a touch hotter toward the bottom like you mentioned. I have never had one get crazy on me though even with abusive burn testing.

The 83 does work but tends to get a little overworked near the top with some oils.

What FO do you use with 6006?

I would also agree, some people get very excited when they see me do something that looks easy not realizing that this takes a lot of time not shown on the video and heck, even using the same recipe can yield different results with so many other factors. It's a tough line to bounce between when doing these. :)

I am new and working with a coconut wax / beeswax blend.  I haven't noticed any cavities yet but I'm still pretty early on in the process.  What should I look out for to be "warned" if a candle may have a hidden cavity after being poured?

For me, and of course depending on the wax you use I would echo exaclty what TallTayl said abut running a skewer down the middle to expose any sinkholes that may of formed. This is especially important with 6006 and if you pour that wax at a cooler temperature. 6006 is notorious for sinkholes and the cooler you pour the harder they are to see in the middle. I've had many tops that looked perfect and once I ran a chop stick down the center it opened the hole up. I like to pour hotter with 6006 so the sinkholes are fully exposed during cooling and then use a heat gun to smooth them out.

I have also watched most of your videos. I tried the method of adding fo at a low temp but it did not work well for me in 464.   I believe we can all learn from both you and this craft forum.

Can you do a video on just paraffin as well.  I would be interested.

The low temp method is a tricky one for sure and one I don't recommend a lot. It's nice to see how it performs and how they come out.
I'm not a huge fan of soy but I do like adding at lower temps when I make them.

Which paraffin are you interested in?

    Omg! Welcome StandleyHandcrafted!

I’ve watched every video and learned so much! Keep it up please! Yes, people can be very critical here! That is one big turn off for me but I’m glad you keep going!😀😀😀

Thank you so much and I hope the videos have helped. :)

I'm not too worried about criticism, come with the territory for putting myself and thoughts out there. lol :D

Coconut blends and soy blends that tend to form cavities (sink holes) (looking at you c1, C3 and 444!) definitely benefit from warmed jars. the more you can do to balance the rate of cooling the less poking and filling you will need to do later.

I tend to use hot water versus an oven just because my shop does not have an oven and I like to wash glass before pouring for nice clean inside walls. If I had a dishwasher in the shop that would be ideal for my glass and ceramic.

I need to do more testing with heated jars, but I've always assumed that the wax would heat the glass to around the same temp.

I have noticed better glass adhesion with 6006 when the jars are placed in the box to cool. I still check for hidden sinkholes but it helps quite a bit.

I don't use 6006 so I don't know the wicking, but when I watched this and saw the wicking he used I thought this can't be right. All mushrooms and oversized wicks for those small jelly jars. Does he only use HTP or what? Well here it is

Did you post the wrong video? I don't wick anything in this one.

What do you wick the jelly jar with when using this wax?

If you're referring to my how to make candles video you are correct. The HTP104 is the wrong wick for that jar, the 93 works much better. I would love to be able to edit that video. The wood wick, way off.
I do not use either of those in the jars now and haven't for quite some time. I've made more current videos with better wicks.

The only certainty about candle making is nothing is guaranteed. Every single variable makes a big difference.

I would agree with that 100%. I always try to update a video if things like that change, which they always do.

I'll look out for the link.

Once my faire season is over I’m giving serious thought to writing a book and doing some candle videos. Not sure I want to open myself up to all that criticism though ha ha

I'd love to see the videos, do you have a link?

  16. You guys are funny and I don't take away any impressions people may have of me but there is quite a bit of wrong information in here.

First, sorry if the candles weren't up to your liking. (to the person who boiught)

    I don't make candles with 11% FO load, I use 8% in 6006

I use the HTP104 in the 9oz straight, which works well.

The medium wood in the jelly jar was over wicked and used for the video and never again.

My wax review videos are longer that one hour to decide. lol

I have initial views and thoughts, testing, and burning then my overall thoughts. You have your thoughts on waxes, why would mine be wrong or right?

I make a kit based on the wax I know the best, 6006 and use wicks that work for the tins.

The goal of my videos is really to show people my process and testing. I always mention these are my results and list manufacturers suggestions when I go out side those lines.

I still don't think cure times are real past a couple of days. I have done multiple tests with multiple batches, 48 hours, one week and three weeks. The same types of tests most people would do. If you see a difference than by all means cure. But lets not pretend that I'm the only one who doesn't believe in cure times. It's widely debated.

My video for making $1000 in a month, is not a how too, or a false hope that anyone can do it. I present it as, this is what it would take to make $1000 in a month. The work that goes into it, the amount of candles it would take. I think people take away from the videos what they want and some take it wrong. I also talk about the exact cost it would take to make those candles.

I make a big effort to let people know that I am not an expert, my thoughts are not facts unless stated and quoted from a reliable source for something like "flashpoints".

I always encourage everyone to go to other groups and ask as my results will not always be yours.

As I have said in many videos, you may not like my style or my not agree with me but please ask and question me. I love a good discussion.
