  1. Last question... I know I've asked plenty this weekend. ? When you describe a candle as having good hot throw, how large an area would you say it scents? A bedroom? A living room? An open concept kitchen/living combo? An entire house? Obviously rooms and homes differ in sizes, but just curious how y'all characterize hot throw vs. medium throw, etc. Thanks!
  2. I am using 11 oz libbey tumblers with IGI 6006 wax, 7% fragrance oil and LX wicks. I am really happy with the lighter fragrance oils but I'm still working on some of the heavier ones. They are safe burning and throw great but the flame is a little weak.
  3. I have been trying to not trim my wicks when testing since that's what most customers do (including myself before I started making them). I've gotten to the point on my other scents that I don't have to trim even during power burns and the sides don't get too hot. It took a long time, but finally got it. This pumpkin one is giving me fits though. Question - If a flame is small (1/2 inch or so) but there is an almost full melt pool, is there risk that the fragrance would burn off before the wax is combusted?
  4. That's kind of what I was thinking. Can you guys tell me what your typical goal is for flame height? Thanks!
  5. I'm not certain I understand the chart. A flame size of 2+ inches which is listed on some of the eco sizes seems like a torch to me. Is this flame size without fragrance oil? I'm sure I'm missing something. Sorry for my amateur questions. ?
  6. Thank you for your response. I agree that it is probably struggling. I guess I am wondering if it is still giving good hot throw and not extinguishing itself, what are the major problems with a struggling wick?
  7. Hello everyone! I'm having trouble wicking WSP Perfect Pumpkin. At the beginning of the burn (maybe burns 2 and 3), the flame height is short... about 1/2 inch. I've attached a pic. It does not extinguish itself and the flame height gets taller as it progresses towards the bottom of the container. My question is... if the flame height is 1/2 inch but is still giving a good HT and seems to catch up as it burns its way down, is the flame height a problem? What is ideal flame height? 1 inch? Thanks in advance for your help.
  8. Hello! Wondering if anyone else has struggled to get a good hot throw with this scent. I've tried Cierra Candles Volcano and LS Fruit Slices (which to me smells like it) and while they both smell nice, the HT is lacking. Does anyone have any feedback/suggestions? Thanks!
  9. I'm currently testing CS Mistletoe in a 11 oz libbey tumbler of 6006 with no dye and 7% fragrance oil. When I test under ideal conditions (trimming wick, burning about 3 hours) the zinc 60 is perfect. However when I do long power burns without trimming the wick, the container gets too hot. I'm wondering if by reducing the oil % to say 4-5%, will that reduce the mushrooms which seem to cause the jar to heat up considerably? In your experience, do you think it will give me a cooler jar?
  10. Thank you Trappeur! I ended up ordering it a few days ago! Excited to try it! Thank you for your review!
  11. Are you using the griddle to preheat your containers or remelt wax or both?
  12. Hi! Thinking about ordering a few new fragrance oils from Elements. They are: patchouli and honey Manuka lavender ginger lime juniper aloe Most of the online reviews are for bath or soap products. Do any of you use these oils for candles? If so, how is the HT? Also, can anyone provide any information regarding the HT of Luxe Linen by Community Candle? Thanks!!!
  13. Hello! I have a few safety related questions. I've been making candles for months as a hobby and am thinking about ramping it up a bit (still very small compared to most of you). Just planning to make some for friends and family. I've recently been wearing a respirator and gloves and I know from reading this forum I should prob also get some safety goggles. Wasn't wearing any of this the first few months but I wasn't making many so hopefully I won't have any ill effects. ?Anything else I should think about? Are there certain health concerns that candle makers have to worry about? Anything that is conclusively linked? Lastly, on a few occasions I placed some scented candles that I needed to remelt into my oven then the next day cooked in the same oven. Not a good idea? What do you guys use in place of the oven? Thank you!!
  14. Thanks Trappeur! I would love to hear your thoughts on the maple street and on your own blends once you pour them. I love that scent.
  15. Wow! Thank you for that amazing response! So so helpful! I am so very impressed with the amount of people who are willing to help newbies like myself on this forum. There are a few fragrances that I've wicked with LX that I am happy with, and a few I've wicked with a z51 that I'm happy with, so that's something I guess. I'll keep plugging along and try some CDs on some of the fragrances I'm having trouble with. I just love CS mistletoe, but I'm having trouble getting it wicked properly. Thank you again!
  16. I'm sorry - just looked back at my notes. LS recommended the LX 18 and 20 not the CD, but the LX 18 and 20 were still way too large IMO. They recommended the CD 12 and 14 I believe. Also too big. Thanks for your recommendation regarding the CD 8 and 10. Im going to keep test burning the LX 14 because I'm liking the burn so far. Hopefully it will catch up towards the middle, but if it doesn't, it will be back to the drawing board and I'll start with a CD 10. I appreciate all of the help!!
  17. Yes, I used the CDs when I first started out and was going off the recommendations given by a supplier. Getting so frustrated with the wicking. I'm really considering just going to straight zinc wicks. I feel like the 51z wicks work for almost every fragrance I have. Nice flame, very little soot, glass never gets crazy hot. Just wondering if people are going to flip over the metal wick.
  18. TallTayl - are you using 6006 as your parasoy?
  19. I tried the CD 18 and 20. I may have been overwicked and gave up on them too fast. I went to LX wicks instead and have liked them. Is there a huge difference between CD and LX wicks? Guess I didn't see too much of a difference but, I'm a newbie.
  20. Yes. This has 7% WSP perfect pumpkin. I've tried CDs and I did not like them. Lots of soot and the flame was wild. I've had the most luck with the LX wicks and the zinc 51s. I will keep burning and see what happens but the flame from the LX 14 is so nice. Just the right size, but I am worried about tunneling. Wthomas - you use zinc wicks correct? I've used them to wick fragrances that are a bit heavier like CS mistletoe and I love them. Just worried about customers not liking the metal.
  21. Libbey tumbler 11 oz. IGI 6006 LX 14
  22. Thanks! It may be a bit off centered (didn't have my wick setter yet) but I think it's mainly the angle. Thank you for your help.
  23. Experienced chandlers... Would love your opinion... these pictures are at the end of the first 3 hour burn. Giving great hot throw. Definitely not a full melt pool, but I know that is not desirable on the first burn. Is this what a first burn should look like? Or do I look under wicked?
  24. I'd like to make a nice Orange Vanilla candle (similar to the Trapp variety). I've been using the JS Orange Vanilla fragrance oil but to me it smells a bit like fuel. Does anyone have a suggestion for a nice Orange Vanilla? Thanks in advance for your help.
