  1. another though, doesn't stearic usually when added to a candle help the candle retain more oil from the FO's or coloring? so essentially a candle made entirely of stearic acid/wax should have a very high capacity for oils... I might try to pour a votive of stearin and a votive of regular paraffin and place a known amount of FO or something that I know is too much for the paraffin and place the same amount in the stearin and see if less bleeds out on the stearin... Does this sound right?
  2. Thanks for the input everyone. Cybersix if you want to burn one for a test as well since its a taper, and report the results it appears that the information is something that people would be interested in knowing. I as well am going to pick up another 5lb bag of stearin on monday and I will pour a couple votives and see what happens. Top: assuming that the project succeeds I will post some pictures. alternatly, if you never hear from me again....please tell my wife I love her and Donita gets my large hurricane molds in payment for all the stupid questions I asked her...the rest of you can fight over my other supplies... Its been a good run...
  3. Cool. Thanks Satin, I figured as much but had doubts about my fine motor skills in bringing the wax up just high enough and then all over my hands and into the cane and I get burned and drop the cane in my dip vat and without thinking I reach down to grab it and end up making a cast of my entire arm... sigh...probably should go buy a couple more aloe plants for the windows.
  4. was plannin on it here in a day or two...just didn't want to waste the stearin if someone replied with a horror story of they day they "poured a stearin candle." it probably will though. I mean if we can burn vicks....stearin should be a walk in the park.
  5. Has anyone here ever made a candle entirely out of Stearin Wax? Is this the same thing as Stearic Acid? I assume it is. Just curious how it turned out. Thanks all. -Luke-
  6. what is the best way to hold a hurricane for an overdip in everyones opinion?
  7. I kept breaking heatguns. Was going through them like water...just burning up the elements. I swited to a glass blowers torch and a digital thermometer.
  8. you could run with the red or pink and call your candles...."sunburn" yeah I know, that was horrible... I'll just go back and make more candles now.
  9. I've read a lot of the threads here, but i was curious... Have any of you taken your candle making to a point where you have thought about or pursued finding investors in your business? -Luke-
  10. Same here. I'm going to drill, but the one I'm picking up from shutterbug is 5 1/2 and I was going to see if they did a custom for kicks and giggles. I might try making my own like Geekrunner. His looked slick.
  11. Thats very cool. I know i am impressed whenever I see something and think..."wait how did they do that?" sadly I'm impressed a lot...
  12. When you do put an FO in a candle, or lets say you put Mineral oil into a candle, I understand that it evaporates and that is how you get a scent. Is any of the oil burned up though and if so, approx how much?
  13. I tried searching for that thread and couldn't find it. I'm glad you did. That was really some interesting stuff... I never would have thought that vicks would have made a usable candle. lol. Good input everyone. Keep it coming.
  14. they tried, but someone kept eating them all before it could make it into the parafin...
  15. Okay so I have some THEORETICAL questions. I have searched on the internet for these but haven't been able to find the right info I want. From what I understand, each wax has a certain ability to absorb things like fragrance oils and/or dyes. Both of which are an oil base. So here are my questions... Can a candle (in theory) soak up (to a certain extent) any oil or substance that is put into it. I mean if I can put a fragrance oil into my candle, then why can't I put olive oil into a candle, or baby oil, or food dyes... Has anyone here ever put anything unusual or odd into their candles just to see what happened? -Luke-
  16. You didn't hijack. Is that the white contraption? Or the metal brace contraption for pillars There is a white wick centering device and I think all it does it just, you put one of the stickey things on the bottom of your pretabbed wick and this contraption has grooves allowing it to center on top of a container where it could be hard for you to get your hand down into thus allowing you to ensure that you are putting a pretabbed wick directly into the center of whatever container you are going to fill with wax. Or are you talking about the metal wick centering thing for pillar molds? I think that all that does is it just keeps it perfectly centered in your mold through the metal cross braces. On the bottom of the mold the pin will just rest on the bottom...maybe it will set slightly into the wick hole to keep it centered. or if you use putty mold sealer it would sink through the hole into the putty a bit. If I was going to use one, since I will be using a mold with no wick hole, I might take a blunted nail and push a little dent into the bottom of the mold to make a little groove for the pin to set in.
  17. since it was your mold I was asking opinions about, I was planning on sending you a pm as well. but this is good info for the board maybe. how do you make sure your hand drill is drilling straight down...just eyeball it? I mean, I do independent contracting in the summer times so I'm pretty mean with a drill...but still... and lets say I make the hole crooked? can I fill it with wax and drill another one?
  18. okay, I was having trouble finding any tutorials on how to do this. What are tips and tricks for drilling wick holes in a candle if you want to use a candle mold that does not have a wick hole drilled in it. how do you ensure that the hole is straight? do you use a drill? do you pour a few drops of wax? Can you stick a metal rod (is this a wick pin?) into the wax and pull out when it has hardened and then insert a wick? More questions I know. I always have a million. Thanks a lot!
  19. There is no period between the www and the donitahoyer.com try... www.donitahoyer.com she forgets the period occasionally.
  20. I let the double boiler run dry ( I was even in the same room just didn't check) walked out for 5 minutes to visit Mrs. White. Started smelling something smokey... Came back couldn't see my hand in front of my face in the kitchen. At least you have this done and over with. Its kind of a karma thing. Once you've burned up a batch of wax, it probably won't happen again for a little while, maybe...
  21. I too would like to know the best way to put somethig this fine and/or detailed into the side of a candle.
  22. That striped is really cool. I'm trying to do something like that with a hurricane. Such a cool effect Good job!
  23. This is a dumb question I'm sure, but I can't rationalize the mechanics behind it. Can you use pillar wax or another high MP wax like hurricane blends for a container? Well okay I'm sure its technically possible. I guess a better question is, why is it a bad idea? I understand not using container wax for things like my giant hurricanes because it isn't a very strong and the walls will heat up too easily, but why not the other way around?
  24. I think I saw on one of my suppliers websites that there was a note in the wax section indicating that it was just a name change and so far none of the wax's had changed in any way. But someone else will have to cinfirm this. I'll see if I can find where I saw this again...
