Can someone very kindly tell me how much wax can pour in a 4 ounce mason jar to the point to allow room for wick, although I  have found I can fold wick over if I feel to the top. I also need to know how much wax can a 8 ounce and 1y ounce mason jars. You assistance is greatly honored and appreciated. Sincerely Pam

A trademark is something that lets you have sole use of a word, phrase or image. Your company name should probably be trademarked if you plan to stick with it for any length of time. Any unique artwork used as your logo should also be trademarked.  Names and images need to be unique enough within the business category you register so as not to be confused with any others. For instance, you can trademark "Pamorama's Candles" in the respective category if nobody else has it. The trademark is ONLY for the EXACT words used in the trademark. Someone else can use Pamorama's Awesome Candles. It would be up to you to attempt to defend the use of that phrase.

Trademarking scent names becomes difficult when using commonly used words or phrases. It is not impossible, as people who trademarked Unicorn Farts and unicorn Poop for soap. They had to sneak it in as others had first use, but did not know it was being trademarked under their noses. Someone trademarked MY WORDS in a similar product a couple of years after I began using using it successfully. Now I see it, and bastardizations of the words all over. It is very frustrating and expensive to defend.

Someone tried to trademark "Soap Loaf" a while back. It made it all the way through to the Registered TM stage. When it became known a lot of opposition was raised through various Facebook groups whose members use the term, and had for years and were able to prove first use in business. The trademark was later revoked. The expense of the process to trademark was lost.

Check on the online trademark electronic search system , TESS,  http://tess2.uspto.gov/bin/gate.exe?f=tess&state=4806:kegher.1.1 to see if words you are thinking of trademarking are already taken. if you find something fairly close, I would personally try to think of something else that is totally unique and totally YOU.

To trademark a business name, the business entity must already be legally established. This can be as a sole prop, s-corp, LLC, etc. you will need to provide a specimen, or physical example of how you are using the name, phrase or image. It can be a photo of Your product. You will also need to provide the date of first use. A listing on your web site that is easily verified, or an etsy listing should do. Make it clear so that there is zero chance it could be misunderstood.

Copyright is "usually" on a written piece of work, or a physical piece of work/art. As artists, we have immediate implied copyright on all things we create. Like when someone creates a statue, for instance, another person cannot simply mold it and begin using the resulting copies. We cannot take licensed images or ideas and automatically apply them to our work without express permission of the license holder (think movie and pop culture images along with sports logos). And you cannot copy and paste someone else's words without credit given the author(and sometimes permission from the author.)

    does this help at all?

Thank you!! This helps a lot!!!!

I did a quick Google search for you. I beleive if your also going to trademark a logo thats a different step to search that it already isn't being used trademarked.

I could be wrong though, the attached link might address that. BTW how have you been, I haven't seen you on the board in awhile . Hope all has been well :)

  4. This is all getting so confusing to me. I actually think Trademark is more of the appropriate term. Do you all trademark the name of your business? I want my name to stick and not be taken by another business. How about candle names and scent shots and wax melts? I don't care about trademarking these items because the scents have so many common names, but I do not want to get legally tied up because someone else did trademark it. It just all gets so confusing to me. 😧

Pam, you don't need any of other ingredients besides wax to make whipped wax......And I SURE AS H.....LL wouldn't be using any turpentine!  As flamable as that is.....omg....what are these idiots thinking?

I've made whipped toppings for my melts many a time.  All you need is your wax and ...

Here are some melts I make with whipped toppings....

    Hope I made myself clear....lol

Yes you did Trappeur. lol You know, it never even crossed my mind about turpentine being flammable!! So glad I never followed thru with it! Which I would have picked up on it when I read the bottle label and also the bottle surely has it printed on label Caution: Flammable for dummies like me. Hahaha! Going to look today for which book I got this out of. If it's one of my 3 books it will be easy to figure out which one and it will be tossed in trash can immediately. I have found this forum to be more educational than any book I've come across! Your toppings are perfect and so beautiful! I'm going to take your tips and practice practice practice! In the past I think I've let the wax cool to much and also didn't work fast enough before it did start cooking because my toppings were lumpy and hard to work with. I like using 464 wax, but wonder if I can use a soy wax blend to make Whipping? I have paraffin wax for pillar candles and also Natures Garden Pillar of Bliss I think its called, which if my mrmories correct is a blend of soy & parrifin. I spent the night with my parents, so I'm not at home to check right now ? Thank you so very much for sharing your pics and wonderful tips Trappeur.

  6. I came across these pics that I saved on my phone some time ago. I think I took pics from one of my candle books with intentions of trying, but not sure. Haven't tried either of these methods so I can't say if it works or not. Just thought I'd share. Have never heard of putting corn starch or turpentine in wax ? has anyone else? lol0426171935.thumb.jpg.96ffc089fffd85d291ed620e0bd96572.jpg0426171935.thumb.jpg.9b6c46d97e3ce268e262c47c9ecf50db.jpg

Ok, then I know what could be done Gail......We could have support groups "right here" on this forum, just under a different heading......well for sure I know we would get a lot of replies on a "FO Ho" section.....lol

  8. Gosh it's been a while since I've been omn here, but this is by far the BEST candle educational site. I'm reading and catching up and taking notes today. Plan to make citronella candles in 16 oz tins tonight. Going to test CD and eco wicks and decide whether to single wick, double wick or triple wick. Going to be a lot of testing which equals expense so any suggestions to start with would be helpful. Trappeur  gave me some advice on this once and I must have stupidly not put it in my notes, I'll look and see if I can find that post too. Going legally blind in left eye due to hereditary macular degeneration, so I'm having hard time adjusting with dizziness and nausea while reading and typing so forgive any typos. Spell check doesn't catch everything or either changes the words me. lol Hope everyone is enjoying their summer. It's hot here in south Ga. But I'm doing really good considering all my health issues. ???? Much love friends. If any of you have facebook, I'd love you too friend me. Just send a little note letting me know you are from this site. My page is

  10. Hey gang, Have been I'll again and ended up in hospital for 4 days about 2 weeks ago, so I haven't been on here lately.

I am ordering some labels from online labels. My question is do I also need to order a label printing program also and if so, what programs do you recommend. I've never printed labels so this is new to me. I want something that will print beautiful print and colors and designs. Thanks so much and any suggestions you may have. Pam

Pam, this is how I label my products.

This is an 8oz tin with label on lid

This is a 12oz status jar with label on face of jar.

I know some do on the lid or the glass top and look nice....but I do mine on the jar itself because there are times that the wax may leave wet spots or show where the wax has pulled away slightly from the wall of the jar which is just a natural characteristic trait of 464 wax I use.  So by putting the label on the glass jar it truly hides a world of minor imperfections that occur and your eye is drawn to the label and your looking at the label instead of the jar which might have wet spots.  It's worked beautiful for me and that is what I do.  This is a 3" square label but you could go slightly smaller too.

    Wow, those are beautiful!!

When I labeled the fronts I did a 2" x 4" rec clear label on the status, then I switched to a 2.5 x 2.5 square clear.  Soon I did away with labels on the candle and put the scent on the caution label on the bottom and another round scent label on top (just in case the tops were switched up by customers).  I kind of got over labels, lol.

On tins I used avery round labels, you can find ones that fit pretty closely to that interior of the top, I don't recall the # off hand but measure that area and look for round labels in that diameter.

    Thank you :)

  13. Doe any one have any label type recommendations (rectanglular-- which I prefer, or square, opal, round or anything else) and the measurements used on the 12 ounce status jars and on round labels for 8 ounce and 16 ounce tin lids. What sealers are recommended to weather (rain) proof the labels and how long after printing to you wait to put sealants on them. Do you put sealants on before or after putting label on jars. I know this is a lot of questions. Thanks for and tips.

I've been using the same wax and have not been adding anything to it.

There are a couple of different vybars, but I don't know if the one that would be considered useful for a low melt point wax would be suitable or do anything for soy wax; I've read that it does not affect it and that it's a waste to try, so I have not.  If I were using a Parasoy, however, depending on the wax, I might consider using it, as I've commonly used it in other types of candles than the container candles I've been making now with soy wax.

My notes say:  Vybar-103 "is intended for waxes with a melt point above 130dF. and Vybar-260 for below 130dF." ... helps with uniform dye dispersion and a reduction in surface flaws.

The same thing, imo, with stearic acid ... in other types of waxes, I use it to make the wax more opaque.  I believe it also increases the melt point, so I don't use it with soy container wax -- the reason I switched from 444 to 464 was for the lower melt point -- I'm still testing the differences in the two waxes to see which one I truly prefer.

Thank you so much. I don't think I'll try any in my 464 then. Thank you for sharing your notes. I'm going to jot them down with mine also.
