  1. I'd be willing to try. What wax are you using and what fragrance oil percentage?
  2. Are there any additives I can use to up my fragrance oil percentage that won't impede the translucency or the mottle in my jar candles? I love using straight paraffin, the color comes out beautifully and has a nice glossy look to it, however if I go over 3% fragrance oil it starts to weep. Any additives I've tried make the candle more opaque and will impede the mottle. I'd like to be able to get up to 6%. I was just wondering if perhaps there is something I haven't heard of that might help. Thanks
  3. Wood wicks will be the death of me! Here I though they would be easier, what was I thinking? I ordered a sample of BIttercreek's wood wicks and will try them out. I also played around with some palm wax and wood wicks and boy I hear you about the that flame, everything I read told me to wick up with palm, guess I wicked up a little too high. For now though I put the palm aside until I can get my regular paraffin wicked. I am also going to play around with the additives, it can't hurt to know what each one will do. It seems I am a wax addict, I have to know what each wax is like and what every combination is like. No matter how happy I am I have to keep testing. Thanks for your advice
  4. I am using a straight paraffin, 4627 mix for jar candles and have finally come up with a blend that works great. I can perfectly wick my regular line. However, I am now trying to start a new wood wick line and I just can't seem to wick my 12 oz status jar perfectly. I ordered a sample pack from Wood Wick Technologies which gave me over 25 different sizes to try. Well can you believe none of them work they way I need them to. I seem to be right in between two sizes. A standard 0.30 3/8 is so close but just burns a little too hot as it gets toward the bottom and a 0.2 3/8 with booster is too low, it dies. I was thinking maybe of trying to raise my melt point in my wax by perhaps adding an additive. So maybe the larger wick would work. Does anyone know if this would work? I figure since 25% of my blend is a straight paraffin the additive may even help my scent throw rather than impede it, if I only add a small amount. Here's another thought though. I spent alot of time getting the look of my candles just right and use translucent waxes which give my candles a pretty glow when they are burning. I don't want to lose that by adding opaque additives, so I was thinking perhaps translucent crystals may work. So I guess my questions is for those who have raised melt points, does this require wicking up? Is my thought process here even valid? Or does anyone have any other suggestions? Or any pointers on wood wicks I may be missing? Thanks.
  5. Thank you everyone, I think I am going to go with my 4627 and 4786 mix for now. I just love how beautiful the candles come out and how most fragrances seem to work well. Also by mixing the waxes it seems like most of my wicking nightmares are over. I am a bit concerned about about all the bad press paraffin has gotten and will just take a wait and see approach as I get into selling over the next few months. I know that I will have 6006 waiting for me if I start to see a high demand for soy. I don't think I could ever do straight soy, so a parasoy sounds good to me. I have also been playing with mottling wax, with not very good results. By hey look for me in a few months, I'll probably have more luck over time. I love the look of the mottled candles and will keep playing with them in my spare time. Thanks again, I loved reading how you all got started.
  6. Hi everyone, I'm new but have been hanging around for a while, reading posts. However this is my first time posting. I was wondering what made you decide on the wax that you did. I have been candle making for around 6 months now and been using 4627 exclusively for most of that. Then I came across these wonderful 8 and 16 oz apothecary jars that I just love to death but then, of course the wicking nightmares began. After testing so many combos over a few months I decided it was time to play with other wax. I tried a mix 4627 and 4786 and loved it, 4630 and loved it as well and also 6006 and as you can guess; loved it. I am still tweaking the wicking a but it is going much smoother. It's not that im easy going either, I am the pickiest when it comes to fragrance oil. I have tried 100s and only have about 20-30 that I like. But how do I decide what wax is the best for me. Was hoping to hear how everyone else came to their decision. Thanks so much.
