  1. I'm looking for a book or website that lists every butter, oil, preservative, etc that can be used to make sugar scrubs. Is something like that available? I know I could find that individually online but it would be very time consuming but I also don't know how many different types of preservatives there are and why adding certain oils would be great for your skin and so forth

      TIA for any help

  2. I wanna say that it's year round here in the desert but I seldom go since it's too expensive for me to shop there every week. Right now there's 3 a week and 4 on the first week of a new month. They've recently started doing an evening farmers market from 4-8 pm last month.

  3. Old Glory: Will do! I'll go read that post right now.

Trappeur: Honestly, I think I just picked up bad habits from old users from like 2005 around here while researching lol. I just started testing wicks the way they were testing them... Luckily you two have set me straight early enough and I'll be more efficient. So thank you! :)

  4. I've been trying to wick this size tin for over a month now. I have 3 possible wicks ECO 4,6 and 8 that all seem to work fine but something weird always happens at some point...

ECO 4: Everything was awesome till there was about 1.5oz of wax left then the flame started flickering and getting real small. There was still plenty of wick left but it just started extinguishing itself prematurely. This was with just 464 wax, no FO or dye. Testing again but with FO in wax this time and see how it goes

ECO 6 and 8: Putting these 2 together because other than the 8 having a slightly bigger flame they both performed the same. I left these candles cure for a day since i was just wick testing, 464 no FO or dye. First burn, after 3 hours both tins were completely melted. I blow them out and let them rest for several hours, about 5 hrs. I then light both again and after 3 hrs they're burning better than the 1st time! Both candles aren't completely melted, they have a nice MP and the tins aren't as hot as the 1st time when the candles were completely melted..

So can any of you make sense of what happened? Cuz I have no clue

I'm testing all 3 wicks again but with dye and FO .5oz pp. I love testing! /s

  5. I'm fairly new to candlemaking and have no experience working with tumblers only tin containers and 464 wax so far. I'm currently using premier 767 and 790. To me it sounds like you need to wick down. The only time the flame on either premier wick starts flickering is if there's a draft in the room otherwise it's great. Also, the only time I noticed the flame was really big was when I had a Pre 790 wick in my 4oz container but am now using an ECO 4 wick and getting great results so far in my 4oz. Hope this helps

But I second with Candybee.  down to Old Glory on premier wicks haha. She knows her stuff

  6. And to answer your other question, my favorite FO suppliers are Peak and Nature's Garden. However, there are so many GREAT fragrance suppliers out there, it's always worth it to get samples from different places (even of the same scent to compare)

Before you know it, you will have hundreds of FO's. LOL (ask me how I know -  :P )

How do you know? ;)  Also, what do you do with all the empty bottles? can they be recycled?

  7. FO finally arrived today. I like both juicy watermelon and monkey farts. JW gives off a sweet scent that you'd smell in a candy but we'll see how they turn out once in candles. The sweet orange and chili pepper is pretty strong, you immediately smell the orange right away and now the free FO I received. I should've read more carefully and said which free FO I wanted because they let you choose but I didn't and ended up getting their key lime pie which just smells nasty. Too much of an egg smell that made me wanna gag

  8. The last picture looks right to me. If you have it, try a 785 also. But 1/2 oz pp seems light. Go ahead and load another test candle up with an oz pp, try the 790 and see if it's not perfect.

The 3rd hour burn of the candle above - see how small that flame is? To me, you need a slightly more robust flame.

No, I am not saying you need a full melt pool at the 3rd burn, but it needs to be close. But when I said complete burn, I meant a full melt pool.

I use a wick tab from Candle Science that is the mid height, and the size is 20 x 6. They have the least expensive wick tabs I've found and I buy them usually 2000 at a time. I spend most of one whole day cutting my wicks and retabbing them every month.

I'll try an oz pp again. Maybe it was the FO but I used 1oz pp of nag champa and both 767 & 790 wicks nearly extinguished after about 2 hrs. I just turned em off out of frustration. I did nothing different from all my other candles and they all relatively burned fine, not perfect but not that bad... Cold throw is great but candles won't last more than an hour and a half before they go downhill. I've got some more FO arriving tomorrow I think so I'll try again otherwise I'll stick to half an oz pp. To me the HT was good at half an oz pp as I don't really like overpowering scents where they just hit you smack dab in the face every time but that may just be me idk

Also, are the premier wick tabs from aztec not already 6mm? I'm trying to measure and check but my only ruler is only in inches, rubber and pretty crappy too. I can't find the sizing on aztec either.

  9. Moonshine, thanks for that info. Looked around and it looks like there are only 1/4 inch pre tabbed wicks available

OldGlory- This candle cured for 11 days. Here's some pics of hrs 1-3 on the first burn                                                     IMG_20150219_121224.jpgIMG_20150219_125926.jpgIMG_20150219_140358.jpg

And yes, I did see that post. Nice burn! I'm currently testing  a pre 790. Here is an 8oz tin, with 1/2 oz vanilla hazelnut pp, pre 790 after 4hrs of burning. Cured for 13 days. Also, what do you mean by a complete burn? Like the entire top of the candle should be melted? TIA IMG_20150223_162825.jpg

  10. Wick necks will also have a role In how soon your candle extinguishes on its own-I personally use the middle height - I don't know the measurements off hand - and the reason being when I used the real short ones the glass got way to hot burning the very end of the candle so I am fine with having about 1/4" of wax left when done burning and when I used the tall ones I had way to much wax left

Ahh! Somehow I never knew that. Maybe I did read up on it but I just forgot... Just measured mine and they are 1/4 an inch long which is about the amount of wax I have left but yea there is still some left on the sides. Maybe it would've melted had I let the candle extinguish itself out

  11. Sorry if this is a dumb question but I really don't know. Ideally you'd want all your wax to burn and be left with very little but somehow that didn't happen with mine even tho i thought I had finally succeeded! I have 1.6oz in wax left after burning for 30 hrs. If I was left with only half an oz i'd be at 38 hrs of burn time since i was burning about .5 oz every 4hrs ;/

I used an 8oz tin container, half an oz pp of vermont honey apple FO from Peak, and a Premier 767 wick

This was the end result of a 9hr power burn since that's what I would normally do when I see my candle is near the end of it's life. TIAIMG_20150223_153215.jpg

  12. ddweller: I received my fo's today - they were suppossed to come Saturday.  What i got:

    Amber Romance

    Fresh Outdoors

    Bamboo & Orchid

    Be Enchanted

    Egyptian Amber

    Earthen Oak

    Lavender Sandalwood

I love them ALL from smelling them from the bottle, with the exception of Be Enchanted - I don't particularly care for this one for some reason.  It smells fruity like, but perfumey a bit too, which I like a lot of perfume scents, but not fruity scents. Maybe I'll like it better in a candle, idk.

I won't get a chance to see how they do in the 6006 until mid next week at the very earliest.

Nice! loving 6/7 ain't that bad. I ended up only ordering Juicy Watermelon (always loved anything watermelon), Monkey Farts and Sweet orange & Chili Pepper plus an extra FO that they'll include in the order. They'll arrive this wednesday. Now i'm gonna look for a nice Jasmine FO to use with it getting close to spring

  13. I'm new at candle making, but I already can tell you I LOVE THE TINS! I did buy some jars, but the simple elegence of the tin, with lids, along with the fact that you cannot really see any imperfections, is the reason I love them.  i did want to use jars to see how my candles would come out, and I like that they look beautiful with color, but after I use my 4 remaining jars I plan on buying more tins and just using those.  I just wish I could find a 10 or 11 oz tin, because I don't want to go to the bigger size 16 oz. tin.  Also, I am horrified at the thought of a candle that I made using glass would break while burning, while I don't have to worry about that with the tins.  I am only making candles for me, my family, and friends.

On the Eco wicks: I got eco 12 wicks with my starter kit from Candle Science, and I got no hot scent using the 464 soy.  I noticed on Candles Science's site that they don't even sell those wicks anymore, and maybe this is why.  Candles and supplies suggested the CD 12 wicks for the 464 and the hassle-free wax, so I used those.  I havent burned any with the CD 12 yet, as they are still curing, but I will post back here with the results when I do.

haha me too sojourner! I love tins because you can hide some imperfections from the sides :P

As for the wicks, I am testing premier 767 and 790 since Old Glory recommends them, unfortunately I used them in my 4oz tins and they're just too big because they were meant for 8oz tins... Doh! Luckily I do have some 8oz tins but waiting on them to finish curing to see how they perform, I did some more research and read that people liked the ECO 4 and CD 7 and 6 for 4oz

According to my family who don't really bs me said that the HT was strong after about a week of curing but I couldn't smell it cuz my nose was broken :( . I think sleeping in the same room where the candles were curing did it lol. Nag Champa and Vanilla Hazelnut are STRONG! lol
