Everything you make has to have 100%. You must have the amount you want for the end result in oz, lbs, grams then divide each ingredient by the percent, so say you have 5 ingredients and say you want 10 ozs of final product. Each ingredient is 10% then you need 2 ozs of each product to reach 100%. Another example is

25 % coconut oil

25% palm oil

25% shea butter

25% oatmeal

====

100%

converted to oz for a final amount of 100 ozs would be

25 oz of coconut

25 ozs palm

25oz shea

25 oz oatmeal

===

100 oz or 100%

I hope that helps

an easy way to figure out how much you need with the percents is going to a lye calculator and plugging in the recipe. I like http://www.soapcalc.net/calc/soapcalcWP.asp as I can type in how many oz/lbs/grams I want in my combinded oils (section #2) and it will figure it all out for me and tell me how much lye and water I need. Figuring that all out on my own would make me very nervous that I would mess up the calculations somewhere.

Easiest way is to use SoapCalc.

If you want to do the math yourself, here's how:

For percentages, you first determine the size of your batch of oils. Say you are doing 800 grams and you want coconut to be 33% of the total. Multiply 800 by .33 and you get your coconut amount.

800 X .33 = 264 grams

You always multiply your batch size by the percentage. Let's do a recipe, 800 gram batch size. I'm randomly choosing oils and their percentages. I have NOT made this recipe, using it as an example.

40% coconut ... 800 x .40 = 320grams

20% palm ... 800 x .20 = 160 grams

25% olive oil ... 800 x .25 = 200 grams

5% shea butter ... 800 x .05 = 40 grams

5% caster oil ... 800 x .05 = 40 grams

2% bees wax ... 800 x 02 = 16 grams

3% cocoa butter ... 800 x .03 = 24 grams

Now lets add it all together to maker sure we did it correctly:

320 + 160 + 200 + 40 + 40 + 16 + 24 = ?

Much easier to do it with soapcalc.
