Silicone to stick wicks

Recommended Posts

I was wondering if anyone could steer me in the right direction. I am out of wick stickums and was considering trying silicone, which I know that some of you have had great success using. I have tried using my high temp hot glue gun, but when I heat up my jars the wicks start to slide around all over the place. What kind of silicone should I try. Can I get it at a hardware store and how long does it take to set up. My DH has some bath and kitchen silicone. It looks like toothpaste and takes 24 hours to set up. I'm thinking that it isn't the right kind. Any help you can give me would be super!!:yay:

GE 1 or 11 is good, 1 is cheaper and harder to find. I use the clear and love it, I buy the kind you use with a calking gun and it last for a very long time. The only way my wicks pull out now is if they are not crimped good. The wick will not slide on you anymore. I wick about a hundred at a time just so they are ready when I need them. I use the wick stickems when I'm testing wicks and the silicone when I have the right one. Good luck.

The best silicone to use is Permatex 66B. That is a clear silcone we use in our race engines. It will handle temp. of over 500 degrees. It sets up in about 2 hours with good strenght. Sets up very strong in 8 hours and full strenght in 24. I know you can buy it at Auto Zone in a squeeze tube and I have even bought it in a caulk tube there as well. I will be wicking all my jars with this silicone. Buying me a new caulk gun and buying it in the caulk tube. Much much cheaper that way.

Hope this helps.

Thanks everyone. I think I am definitely going to go that route. I would rather have the confidence that my wicks are never going to slide than hoping and wondering if they do when someone burns them. Hopefully my customers would feel the same way. When I have more money, I may have to buy some more wick stickums. I did read in the archives that someone found some double sided sticky tape (kind of foamy, like you might put on the back of a small mirror or something to stick to the wall) She said that it came in a roll and she just cut out little squares and it stuck just like wickums. thanks again. sharon
