Advice on molds

I'm looking for advice on molds...I am itching to try CP now and have a recipe that I think I can manage thanks to Kris. Does this mold look like it would work? I like the idea of not having to line the mold...it seems the sides loosen and you push it through one end and cut the soap. Is that what it looks like to you guys? It is pretty spendy but might be worth it. Do you have better advice for molds that work great and are easy to cut the soap after it is hard. I'm afraid I will cut doorstoppers...that's what my husband calls steaks that are cut uneven...he's a meatcutter...lol.:)

Thanks!

-Joanna

I can't answer you on this particular mold. I think someone on the board bought a mold from this dealer and had some customer service issues and the mold. Try doing a search for soap molds or molds and see what comes up. Wish I could be more help.

Well...I just bought 2 soap molds from Southern Belle Soaps, 1 small and 1 medium. I heard good things about them on here and they are not gonna make them much longer so thought I'd give them a try. They are more reasonable than the one I posted above. Ordered oils to make a basic cold pour recipe...now just need some lye and freezer paper! I'm so excited!:yay:

I have the log mold you originally asked about. It is a good log mold - and in reality it does not need to be lined - but if your soap is soft it takes a few muscles to get it out...But I have been using it for over 2 years and have been very happy with it. I was lucky enough to get an upland on the classifieds here and absolutely LOVE it! I really like the slab molds better than the logs but I think that is just a personal preference. I have 2 slabs and the one log and by far the best mold is the upland. My other slab is acrylic with the dividers and I like it also - don't have to cut which makes your soaps nice and even....I am cutting challenged for sure! But the liner on the upland has cut lines so it isn't too bad!

Yes they are a bit pricey.....I guess if you are able to make your own that would really bring the price down. But I think the $$ is worth it if it makes it easier and gives you a good bar of soap!

If you ever have a few extra dollars, buy an upland - well worth the investment (imo)!

Have fun!

Debbie, you have more patience that I do, lol. I have that original mold and I think I used it twice. By the time I got my soap out of it, I was pulling my hair out, as well! I have three different Uplands, a loaf, a round, and a slab. I use the slab almost exclusively. I just LOVE my Uplands!

Good luck with your new mold, dixylight!

Dixylight - I have the exact mold you are considering. The no-liner thing is not quite true in my experience. I made my very first batch of soap in it using no liner and about hurt myself and the mold trying to get it out! Grrrr. I've lined it every time since.

I also have a double log version from the same maker. I use it sometimes, but not as often as my slab molds from Misty Creek. I don't have an Upland. :embarasse But I do like the Misty Creek molds because they are easy to line and have kerfs on the sides that the big old blade they send with it slips down into to cut. My husband cuts them for me. I do lousy job of it. :rolleyes2

Good luck with your mold! Enjoy your first batch! :yay:

Janis - for that log mold I usually slide my knife along the sides to make it easier to remove....took me a while to figure that one out :shocked2: but I unscrew both ends, slide the knife down the long side, remove that piece, slide the knife down the other side, remove and then slide my knife along the bottom and it is done....I tried lining just the sides and that works great also....and no problem because you don't have to 'fit' the lining....I don't worry about the ends cause they usually come off easy enough.....

But again, I don't much like the log mold since I like the way the soap looks on the slabs....And I find if you put 3 pounds of oil in that log, it makes them too big....so I usually only use that one for 2 #'s ....

Can't believe I waited 2 years to get the upland....had I known then what I know now the upland would have been my 1st purchase when I started soaping. I thought it was too pricey - :P but it really is worth it! It's funny how I will spend zillions on fragrances but didn't want to spend the $50 or so for the mold......go figure!
