  1. Thanks for all the information. I'm getting a really good burn and scent throw so I think I'll just deal with the mushrooms! I'll just reorder the same wicks I am using now. If I ever get to point where I wanted to sale I'll do testing with the other wicks but since it's just me - I'll stick with what works! Thanks for all the input!!

  2. I got my first peaks order and LOVE all the oils I have gotten so far - my bonus oil was cinnamon and boy is it strong!!! They all seem to have awesome throw though! I am making chunk votives and some 8oz jelly jars - stricly for myself; I do not sale my candles. For my jars I am using J50 wax and my current wick is 44-24-18Z - I am get that mushroom effect when it is burning. I am going to reorder some wicks this week and was looking for suggestions for a new wick size that may not mushroom. I don't know why I care, they are just for me...but my wonderful husband always says how nice the candle smells but the wick sure looks funky! :laugh2: Any input would be appreciated! Thanks!

  3. Well .. duh .. YES I am, like a dork, clipping it to the side of the presto pot :laugh2: That's got to be it! Boy is my face RED!! I'll try the CORRECT way and see how it reads this time. It is a candle thermometer I got in a starter set at Michaels with a pouring pot and some other things. Had a gift card for Michaels and decided to try out candle making. I am so glad I did - It's alot of fun and addicting! The Target thermometer sounds great. I may need to invest in one of those.

Thanks so much -you guys rock! I'm sure I'll have tons of other embarrasing questions too! :wink2:

  4. I am a total newbie and placed my first peaks order .. it should be here tomorrow!! I am so excited :) For anyone that didn't get my recent introduction post, I tinker around at home I do not sale my candles they are just for me.

Question: I did buy a presto pot and have been making some chunk votives. My question is this ... my presto pot setting says warm ... then 200. I have been putting it on warm but when my wax is melted and I put my thermometer in it reads almost 200 and if I try to let it cool down it hardens up before it ever goes down to say a 180 or 170 reading on the thermometer. What am I doing wrong?? Good thing I don't sale them, right? lol like i said .. NEWBIE! but I have really loved what I have made for myself so far. The thermometer I have is from Michaels so I assume its a good thermometer. Any input would be appreciated!

  5. Hi There! Just wanted to introduce myself .. been lurking and thought I'd speak up lol My name is Melody and I have been making candles for about, oh -- 2 months! Totally newbie. Into it just for hobby sake. I love candles and buy alot of them so I thought I'd make my own and have some fun. I've been making mostly votives and a few containers. I really like making chunky votives and have pretty much mastered that. My DH likes container candles so I am moving onto chunky containers. I put my first order in with peaks and can't wait to get my oils in! The first time I ordered was a diff. supplier (before I found this board) I have heard so many great things about peaks .. can't wait to test it out!

I do have one question. I have heard of people putting glitter on the top of their candles. Is this just regular glitter and I'm assuming it's not flammable??? I do NOT want to burn my house down! Thanks for any input :wink2:
