  1. Hello.

I'm new to this forum and to candle making.

I am located in Johnstown, Ohio, near Columbus, and am interested in finding a local source from which I can purchase pure soy wax by the case.

A source near Cleveland, Ohio, would also work as I travel there from time to time.

Any information on the location and contact information for such a source or sources would be most appreciated.

Thank you in advance for your help.

I don't know if Hamilton, OH would be too far for you. But, there is The Candlemaker's Store there. You can sign up for there weekly specials which get emailed on Wed. nights and they have great customer service!

  2. Here is one candle website that I was browsing through and after reading I am not finding why the candle is Green. www.simplinature.com

Your post caught my attention and I decided to take a look at this site to for my own curiosity. I, too, couldn't find ANYTHING stating why they are "green" and noticed that they state the following:

"Simpli Nature is a "green" soy candle company. "

"No added chemical dyes" yet their candles thought not "dyed" are fragranced and I didn't see anything about them using EO's to fragrance the candles, which even then doesn't make them "green". This made me wonder what do they think a fragrance oil is other than a man made "chemical".

They also stated they wanted "the best clean burning soy candle on the market. We developed our own soy wax recipe that burns straight across and down." Isn't this typical of soy candles in general????? Maybe the FO's are affecting my brain and I'm missing something here.:grin2:

  3. I usually use gb 464 with fantastic results. Well' date=' my supplier ran out and I subbed for 444. The hot and cold throw are almost identical, but I get terrible sinkholes when I pour 444 that I never got with 464. I am heating to 180 adding FO and pouring anywhere from 140-150, which is what I pour 464 at. Any ideas?[/quote']

I use 444 and it's recommend pour temp is 130-140 and I don't get sink holes at that temp (130 works well for my home conditions). You might try this and see if it helps.

  4. Do you temper your wax? I've been playing with tempering lately, although I use a different wax. But recently w/adjustments to my various temps, I've found a good bit of difference vs. when I don't temper. I have achieved better glass adhesion and best of all BEAUTIFUL CREAMY SMOOTH TOPS! Just a thought. AND if you're using a presto pot, it's so effortless to add this step. When I was using a double boiler, it was entirely too time consuming.

    Best of luck to ya!:cheesy2:

  5. Ok, maybe I am dense and maybe I am gullible but why would I get liability insurance for products with all natural igredients..........CP Soap, Sugar Scrup, Body Butter, etc?

I mean doesn't someone already know if they are allergic to a particular ingredient ad if they do not, how would it be my fault?

Not necessarily! I ate raw celery w/peanut butter all my life 30+ yrs and then one day, WHAMMO! I'm allergic to raw celery and started swelling from inside out, including mouth & throat. And, it may not be "YOUR" fault BUT, better safe than sorry!:)

  6. do you add any addtives with the 474?

Nope, straight out of the bag. The 474 is so easy to work with. Although the price has went up (like all), so I'm working on blending it with pure soy wax to see if I can keep costs down. I'm not thrilled about that because this such a great wax but I'm afraid could end up being too expensive for votives.:undecided

  7. Just an outside thought for those who want to be greener - what about collecting or using the brown recycled paper from grocery bags?

You'd get a pair of scrapbooking scissors and cut out the desired shape and use a label to tie it together. It'd leave the ends open for sniffing, and provide a peek at the colors, but would not only be made from recycled material, but also is continually recycleable itself.

Check out this store, they have biodegradable pla bags. http://greenearthofficesupply.stores.yahoo.net/celbagligwei.html

  8. I bought a 50# box of CB Advanced container wax in August for $54.00. I bought another 50# box this week and the price was $69.00. Wow!

I hear ya! My supplier recently had a really good sales offer for wax but I didn't have the money at the time. Then, when I did, wow! the price had went up. I think it's went up 2x this year already! OUCH! Fortunately, they just had another sale on one of my waxes so it about made up for the price difference. I'm not going to give up though. I think later this year, things will turn around. I sure hope! Good luck to all of us!:smiley2:

  9. Hey I just wanted to let any one know that is wanting to try CDN wicks to email wicks unlimited for samples. I email them Monday to asked about which wicks would be good for my 4" diam candle and they emailed back saying that the Stabilo 22 (CD 22) or the Stabilo KST 22 (CDN 22) might work but they only sell them at 1000 pieces. So I asked if they could send me a sample of them. And OMG they sent me 20 of each. :yay: I was thinking like 5 maybe but wow I cant believe they would send that many for FREE, no shipping charges, nothing. :shocked2: I have never requested free samples before but I was thinking I would have to pay for shipping at least. Well I will be able to test with these for forever, I am new to this and right now I am only working with 4 scents. I am so excited so I am going to make some candles now.

They are great, aren't they?! I emailed them recently for recommendations and they said they'd send 3-4 samples. I got 20 of each too! I was SOOO surprised and delighted!

  10. I have a 4 inch apothecary jar that I am now using CSN16 wick. I us GG palm wax and I am still getting a little wax on the side of the jar. The mp just doesn't seem to get all the way to the edge of the jar. I'm sure I could double wick to help with the problem, but I am really trying to avoid double wicking at all cost.

Does anyone have the same experience with the CSSN wicks or do you any recomendations for another type of wick that works well in GG palm?

    Thanks,

    Bruce

    Bruce,

I use Golden Brands soy wax but have also had some difficulty with the CSN wicks leaving hang up in my jars, just an FYI. I am thinking of switching wicks. Good luck!

  11. I just set up an account with matchbooks.com. I ordered 2500 custom matchbooks for $100 including shipping. I thought that was a good price and they didn't look as country as the other site. I am going to use them around my candles and as buisness cards at craft shows and such.

    Anna,

That sounds like a great deal especially w/shipping included, that's only 4 cents each. I like your idea of using them as business cards.:)

  12. Hello Everyone,

Awesome find----if you are looking for matchbooks to go with your candles found a real cute place. Its called Kountry Expressions. Reasonably prices. I ordered some for a Bridal Shower that I am making candles for.

Let me know what u think?

    Thanks

    Kathy:)

Great minds think alike! :cheesy2: My boyfriend and I were just discussing the matchbook idea a few days ago. Thanks for the thread and website!

  13. I have tried it will GW444 and stearic acid and actually have 2 different batched ones burning right now. One is doing fairly well but would definitely not be one I would sell. The other, actually, is doing very well and looks quite nice. But, even so, knowing that some people do not follow directions, would only sell one made from "pillar blend". For personal use, this one has been very enjoyable.

  14. What wax and wick combo are you using? Maybe your wick is too large?

Ronnie, thank you for your help! I blended Golden Brands 416 & 474, no fo's, colors, dyes and CSN 7 & 9. The 7 was too small and the 9 burned about right. But I just remembered that I have a batch of straight 474 votives that I haven't tested yet! :shocked2: Maybe I will get better burn times from them. I do small batches at a time for my testing and then ususally let them cure for a week or more. Well, sometimes I just can't wait that long:cheesy2: . Thank you again!

    Kathy

  15. I tried the 416 mixed w/474 last night for votives as I do not like 416's cold pour at all! And I did it again! I only used 3/4 tsp of CSN's Love Spell and you would not believe the CT I've got this morning! It fills my kitchen and living room. Plus, they look great w/silky smooth tops, can't wait to burn these!!!

Maybe I've finally found a way to use this 416 after all. If I can continue to get a great throw like this (we'll see how the HT turns out), I could save a boatload on FO's:cheesy2: . The last batch I did w/474, I used 3/4 tsp of CSN's Moon Lake Musk and achieved great CT & HT!
