  1. I have a question for some of you web gurus

I am not quite ready to start a site but have a name that I want to register for future use

I have not researched fully which host I would use when the time comes but I want to go ahead and register my domain name - to insure I will have it when I am ready

Unless I am mistaken, some places will register the name but technically they own it not you - as long as you are letting them host your site you are ok - but if you go with someone else there can be a problem

I guess my question is this - Where can I register my name so that it is mine and I have it when I am ready for it?

    thanks

I've never heard of not being able to register a doman until you're ready to use it. We use godaddy for all our own domains as well as the majority of our clients. I have several domains there now that I've registered a few years back and am just waiting for the time to make the sites to go w/them.

You should have no trouble registering whatever domain you want now for use later. If you run into a registrar that tells you otherwise, go somewhere else :)

  2. I also have a Mac which means Primera doesn't have templates for us Mac users. Do you use any small circle labels to print with? Thanks!

    Rae

I actually just ordered 3" labels, so not small, but circular anyway :)

We use Photoshop to print ours and hubby has also opened those and printed from Preview as well. No problem with either. Took maybe 10 labels for each size to get the spacing just right but he's noted on each one the numbers and anytime we go to print one, we look at that and set it accordingly.

And in case anyone doesn't know - this is the cheapest place to get labels and ink (and the printers as well.)

I've been very happy with their service and the quality of the products. THey are an authorized Primera distributor and typically what is ordered one day is shipped out the next. At least for my 5 orders from there. And I only paid $1090 for my printer, which was about $500 less than anywhere else I could find.

  3. We use the Primera LX400 for Spoonfudge, Gluten-free mixes and cupcakes. No issues whatsoever.

We print from a Mac and hubby does all that. If someone needs assistance, let me know and I"ll see if we can help out. AT this point we've printed thousands w/out any issues :)

LOVE this thing! Best $1k I've spent at one time!

  4. We strongly recommend to our clients that they avoid a splash page. I don't care what ranking it gains if it turns away customers. People don't want to be click click clicking to get to your products - less is more.

You can have the greatest ranked site in the world and be #1 on google for 1 billion years, but if your site turns away customers, it's a moot point.

As a shopper, I hate flash and splash pages. I want to get to where I'm going. I'm a busy person and rarely take the time to read through huge chunks of text or spend time on splash pages.

So this is just a long way of stating that IMO, no. Avoid them :)

  5. Wow. That's gorgeous! My mom made all us girls learn to needlepoint/cross stitch when we were growing up but I seriously cannot do more than 5 minutes now w/out feeling like i'm going to crawl out of my skin. I have no patience for this type of thing.

    You're awesome!

On a side note, hey, AJ! Fancy meeting you here :P

  6. Are you talking about boxes like these?

I use those at Christmas. Fill them w/shred and then put my fudge on top and shrink wrap the entire thing. Then I take a long tie ribbon and pull it taut so that it wraps on all 4 sides and ties on the top. Looks classy :)

    HTH!

here is a photo of what I was doing. Not shrink-wrapped, but you can get the idea :)

  7. This is contraversal in the hosting world. In my opinion windows server platform is no more secure than their pc platforms. They did probably hack the DIY servers but probably got in through an exploit (probably a control stack overflow) in feature cart. You may be happy with DIY so if you are and they offer hosting you could always run a different shopping cart if they allow it. IMO php is the way to go it offers everything and more as asp and is much more secure.

I totally agree. DH and I have been doing web development/hosting for 8+ years and DH was a programmer for a major internet company prior to that. We have nothing to do with windows servers and won't work with anyone who uses a windows server.

In all our years in businesses, with all the hundreds of clients we've worked with - we've never had a single person hacked.

I would seriously consider looking for a different hosting company if they are being hacked into on a consistent basis. IMO, 1 hack is 1 too many!
