Fixing to place an order and can't decide if I should add on a dozen 8oz tins to test with my wax samples or go with 8oz Kerr jars that I can get locally..
-
I would like to test USA (Univeral Soy Additive) in 415, but I don't want to order an entire pound just to test a small bit with a couple pounds of wax.
Anyone know where I can get a small amount of this additive to try? I have contacted one of the companies that sells it find out if it's something they can offer, but I have yet to hear back.

That's what I do without the heatgun part.
Wonderful! Thank you.

Instead of attaching the wick to the bottom of the tin - can I poke a hole into the candle, insert wick, heat gun it and then burn?
Or is it harder than I'm thinking to put a hole into the candle? I'd be testing 6006 and 415.. and I want to test both HTPs and CDs in 8oz tins.
Would save on wax if this is possible..

Posted in classified that I'm looking for USA. I don't need a lot, just enough to try in a few pounds of wax to test is all. To see if it's even worth it spending the shipping costs on a full pound..
-
If you're ordering the USA from TCS, you can call and request the flat rate box....they do it for me :-)
Thanks for the tip!

Shipping was one of the things that really surprised me when I undertook this hobby. I understand shipping costs on a 60 pound case of wax, but 12, 1 ounce FO bottles? Because I wanted to try oils form a number of places and a wide range of waxes, shipping has been unbelievable in relation to what I actually bought.
Oh I know! I remember the costs being high a few years ago when I did this, but now that I'm trying to get back into it - it must have gone up. I've been playing online the last few days trying to figure out what to order from who to TRY to save on shipping. I thought I had it figured out, order from Lonestar (for my wax and wicks). But I wanted to get Peak's sampler FO pack, and the shipping on 10oz of oil is nuts. Put them in a flat rate box! lol.
On that note - anyone have opinions on the FOs from Lonestar if I just order everything through them?

For instance I'm wanting to order one single thing from this one supplier - Universal Soy Additive. It's not available from any of the other suppliers I'm needing/wanting to order from. The USA is only 4.99 but shipping to me is over $10 via priority. Absolutely crazy.. Too bad they can't shove it in a flat rate box and save me almost half that shipping.. :rolleyes2

Candle Cocoon- but I never bought wicks from them so I don't know what sizes they have
Thanks And I did find the supplier abbreviation list for a refresher.

I can tell you my experience with peak cotton wicks in 415 - NOT a good match- I got mushrooms like I never saw before! The throw was great but serious big balls! Lol
The CD and CDN series have worked best for me in this wax- I have not tried the HTP
The CD you can get at lonestar with the taller neck- NG has switched to the the short neck which I feel is a safety hazard -for my jar anyways
The CDN you get at southwest candle supply or CC
Trying to find what supplier CC is..

Looking at ordering containers online since my local walmart only has the larger Ball canning jars...
Can anyone tell me the dimensions (diameter and height) of the Kerr 8oz wide mouth and the Ball 8oz? Wondering if they're the same and my googling isn't finding me any answers.
TIA!
**Nevermind I think I found my answer!**

So CD is not the same as Peak's Cotton Core wicks? Peak's are what I'm looking at right now since I can hopefully get nearly everything from one place and save on shipping.
-
Forgive my possibly silly question... but I've only used HTP wicks in the past. However, my reading suggests a cotton core wick for use in 100% soy waxes. I had thought, for some reason, that CD and Cotton Core wicks were the same thing. That is until I came across Rustic Escentuals wick page that has both listed lol.
So what is the difference between the two??
Editing to add: Will be ordering some 415 soon from Peak, and will be using it in glass jars - as for how I'd be using the wicks.
Thanks!

I find that tins are more difficult than glass to wick properly. What seems underwicked at the start of the candle can turn out way overwicked in the bottom third of the burn.
The tins do not conduct heat the same way glass containers do, so the bottom half of the candles can get hot quickly.
I had not heard this, thank you for the info!

Paraffin!
Unless your stuck on using 100% soy. If you're going to add USA why not use a wax with it already added, like 464, C-3, Xcel, etc.
I like to add paraffin to about the 25 - 30%.
I am wanting to try Xcel too, I've heard good things about it. And it's available from my closest supplier (which is still a day's drive away lol).

They do get hot. I use a wick with a long neck which puts out the flame about 1/4 above the bottom.
Well I guess you would assume that a lit flame within a metal container would cause the container to become hot right? Not being sarcastic, just trying to clarify since I haven't yet used a metal tin for candles. But I plan to go that route this time since I'd like that look better. But it'd be the same caution as with a glass container candle, or any candle for that matter, to not move while lit.

You can use USA- it works very well with 415- and you can not use anything at all and play with tempering and pouring temps with excellent results to -pouring just before slush stage works best for me and from what I have read on the threads- most people
And I do preheat my jars
Universal Soy Additive, gotcha. Thank you so much for the info!

415 if your wanting a good throw from a candle and Xcel if you want it to look pretty-
I have had great luck with a Xcel blend in melts but throw a wick in it and no throw for me....I gave up quick
I used 464 for a very long time and its a very nice wax- good throw and good appearance- I switched to 415 due to some burn issues with the 464 and the HT throw in 415 was way better for me
And as rjdaines stated- I also found beeswax to not work that great in 415 - I did like it in 464 though - have not tried it with Xcel
Is there an additive I can add to the 415 to help with the appearance?
-
Did you have any luck with the Xcel?
-
I've been pouring tins for 10+ years, and I wholesale. Never used a footed tin.
If you have questions about it, why not test both? Best way to get an answer you'll be satisfied with is to see it for yourself.
Thanks, I just wasn't sure if it was a safety thing with the candle getting hot or something. Thanks!

They're glass tureen candles with a screw top canning lid, so they should be ok then. I don't have a warmer right now to try them out, that's why I asked. Thanks!
-
Awesome - thank you everyone! I did submit a request for a sample, crossing my fingers!

I am enjoying making my own blends, trying a 3 wax blend at the moment to get a melting point that I think I want.
Aw thanks. Good luck with that!
I'm leaning towards an all soy wax this time anyways, was just wondering if there was something similar to my old wax love.
-
Was it a parasoy blend or a blend of 2 soy waxes?
Oh my... I want to say it was parasoy but I'm honestly not to sure.. it was 5+ years ago that I used it. :/ I am pretty sure it was a solid wax rather than flakes. So that's what has me leaning towards saying it was parasoy..
Can I do this to test wicks?

Right, but it would let me narrow down the wick without making several candles for several different wick sizes.
