I make 8 ounce jars and use 6006 with 51-32-18 zinc core wicks. I don't get any soot at all
-
I use 1 oz per pound and get excellent throw. I have used 1.5 oz and really the scent wasn't remarkably different so I went back to 1 oz. Even the lightest scents are nice when the melt pool is good. Just my experience

I had a lot of trouble with the 6006 when I first started. I found that I was stirring in the fragrance and scent too fast. I slowed way down and now I rarely get bubbles. If I do, I pop them with a toothpick

It's been awhile since I have visited these boards. 2016 ended badly for us. My husband was on his way home from getting a tire fixed and was hit by a semi. Physically he is ok now but mentally, not so much. A week to the day after the wreck, our neighbors dog bit him. We have had issues with that dog for over 8 years and after many calls to the sheriff, finally something is being done. Hubby had to go through the rabies series because they couldn't produce records. So, now after recouping for a time, I am ready to make candles again. I am getting ready to place an order with Lonestar Candle Supply. I want to get 6006 wax, Small wood wicks, FO and dye. I will be making container candles. Anything else that is imperative to have? Thanks in advance!

Thanks everyone for your comments. I will play around and see what happens. I'll let ya'll know

I should have added....I really like the wood wicks from TFC. They have always been consistent for me and the price is decent. XL is pretty big. What wax and container would you be using?
I want to use straight paraffin and jars. For those who were trimming the wicks, would a ruler and exacto knife work if I needed to trim? I will just have to test and see what happens. I just really like the look and "feel" of the wooden wicks. Hoping I have some success! LOL

I love the idea of wooden wicks. I've not used them but am planning on it. Is there a particular type of wax that is better suited to wood? Or will they work in any wax?

Awesome! Thank you!

I'm thinking that if I plan on making any candles during the Winter, I am going to have to warm the jars, We don't have heat and our house has no insulation to speak of so it gets really cold in here.

Hi Lora!!
When I first started making candles, I was told to warm my jars 1) to prevent breakage from pouring hot wax into a cold candle jar 2) so that my wax of choice will adhere better to the side of the jar 3) and this is my own feeling....I believe that the wick stickums DO stick better to the bottom of the jars because of the heat. I use the Presto Griddle below to warm my jars....and I set it on WARM only...your jars do not have to be hot before you would pour wax in them. I buy my Preso Griddles from Walmart and if you do decide to warm your jars...save time and money and buy the big one...you can pour tons of jars at one time that way and just keep adding jars to the back of the griddle and moving the warm ones to the front ...that way they are always warm and ready to go. ALSO ....if you make pillar candles or hurricane candles...these griddles are the BOMBDOTCOM to level them out.
Those are the reasons I have read for warming the jars. I have one of those griddles! Thank you. I guess it's just personal preference then. I have always just poured into jars in the past but thought maybe I was missing something after reading.

Can I ask what the purpose of heating the jars is for?
I never warm mine up.

Just reading the forum. I've read several posts saying it helps to warm the jars for the reasons that puma52 has stated.

You know....no one should EVER get their knot's in a knicker.....oh I mean knickers in a knot over a question!! I mean please!
I agree with you 100%. But I have also experienced the knickers in a knot bunch on other boards. LOL I'm just glad this place is not like that! I love it here!

How do you all heat your jars prior to pouring? In the oven? In a water bath? Wondering about discoloration?
-
Thank you! I never know if a question has been asked a million times and there are those people who really get their knickers in a knot if it's asked too many times.

4786 is a blended container paraffin wax. It has additives etc to hold more fragrance for scented container candles. The 1284 is a straight paraffin wax that is firm enough for votives and also for containers, however it doesn't have any additives and so you will need to add your own or to use it as is.
Thank you so much. Exactly what I needed to know.

I can see both sides of this. Would it be "safer" to use the vintage jars on a warming plate? No wick, no flame and really low heat? Would that even be possible?
-
Welcome! I am new to the forum as well. You will find lots of great people and lots of help as you start your journey!

I've used all kinds of jars too. Never had an issue with any of them
-
It's confusing to me too! LOL I was hoping there was a file somewhere with all the acronyms in it!
-
Thank you. From what I read they are both container waxes but the 1284 is cheaper and just wondered why
-
Can anyone tell me the difference between IGI 4786 and IGI 1284?

Would you like me to send you a sniffie of peak's rose bouquet? If so, just send me a pm with the mailing address. I put a little on a blotter in foil so it goes in a regular envelope.
I would love that. Will PM you, thanks so much.

I was looking at several companies and I can't find Rose FO. It may be an "old" scent but I love it in candles. Suggestions?

Oui glass yogurt jars

Isn't anyone concerned about the jars not being specifically for candles? I only use jars made for that purpose and don't use things like teacups, other old jars etc. I wouldn't want the liability on the off chance something happened. Just curious
