  1. You most certainly can. Even the Ministry of Soybean Propaganda agrees you can call it a soy candle. There's no official definition of what soy wax is, but obviously it should have a high proportion of soy in it. Personally I'd go with a 70/30 blend. With that sort of wax, one of the soybean growers' associations will actually certify your product as a genuine soy candle.

and which association are you talking about?

  2. I'm on RJ's Yahoo group....she posted this the other day:

"Someone cancelled the automatic monthly payment with my website host and my website is gone. Kapoot! Unfortunately we can't retrieve anything. It's all gone. Everything. Including all our recipes, calculators, tutorials, everything. No more ordering from our awesome website. No more sharing your fave recipe with your soaping friends. Only someone truly evil would do something like

    this!!"

There was a post last night that they think they will have the site back up in a few days.

    Donna

you might tell her to try the way back machine - they archive websites so she could manually update the "new" site by using web.archive.org's records - hth

  3. the only experience I've had with Maddison Avenue Candles is that they stole very large chunks of my website - word for word and pasted it on their website as their own.

I did contact them and they HAVE changed it somewhat but there are still massive chunks of text that I personally wrote for our website which is still sitting on theirs. This seriously pissed me off as a lot of the text on our site took ages to reasearch and write, so for this company to just waltz in, copy and paste it onto their own website and then have the NERVE to put a copyright symbol on their page - it's just a joke.

I will never purchase from this company as I would NEVER do business with a company who so openly stole the hard work of others - even if their FO was amazing.

I too have had the same experience - jeanette (owner) is a serious copy thief. When they first started out her whole site was a dupe of mine.
  4. According to the hershey company - their trademark(s) apply to candles as well as chocolate. In a c&d letter I just received from them, it says" The kisses trademark and trade dress are protected by a variety of state, federal and common laws, including, but not limited to federal trademark reg. nos 2815737 and 2757584 which are specifically in connection with candles"

  5. I just got a letter from the wonderful Hersheys corporation. It's a real nasty-gram stating it's illegal for me to call any candle "hersheys chocolate", (fyi-my candles are NOT conical shape). I purchased my fragrance from bitter creek - named "hersheys chocolate" so that's what I named it. On the "infringing page" I put a disclaimer that "all fragrance "types" are brand names and registered trademark of the original manufacturer. Hershey didn't care. THey state that their trademark numbers are specifically connected to candles. Who would have thought - chocolate and candles under the same trademark??

I contacted bitter creek and told them I had to give them up, as hersheys demanded I give up the name of any business relationship involving the "infringing merchandise" or face further prosecution. Bittercreek said they had been contacted a few weeks ago and have since changed the fragrances' name to "chocolate syrup". They also said they didn't give up my information, but I'm suspicious, as they were contacted a few weeks before me, and the hersheys letter was sent to an address associated with my cc, not the public address on my website.

So be forwarned, hersheys is on a witch hunt. If you want to read the letter I have a copy on my site - Pm me and I'll send you the link.

It's a sad day when a huge corporation like hersheys has to pursue the small business candlemaker!!

  6. Melties. No matter what you call them, they wont understand what it is until you explain it to them. I go through an entire speal every time.

6 pack, break one off, add to burner, yada yada.
