  1. Every now and then articles come up that any product containing vegetable shortening is a poison, thus we don't have such products as Crisco, even margarine is not made from vegetable shortening and water for a long time.

Not sure about petrolatum, will have to check for its availability. Dictionary says that petrolatum is how Americans call Vaseline, I think its not true, because I did check unscented Vaseline contents and they don't even have petrolatum. According to Wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Petroleum_jelly) it can have many other names.

If I find it, do you happen to know approximate formula for its usage with paraffin?

  2. According to this link (http://www.howtomakecandles.info/cm_article.asp?ID=CANDL0401) (see 2nd formula below), one needs "vegetable shortening" for making container candles with paraffin. "Vegetable shortening" is hydrogenated oil, which is not very accepted for use in our country, thus I cant find supplier for it. Instead I did find supplier for palm oil (MP 36C) or palm stearin (MP 50C), both being solid at room temperature. I wonder if these are good substitutes for "vegetable shortening" and which one is better?

Also, while we are at it, is soft microcrystaline wax really needed for this formula?

  3. A presto is a fryer that is used to melt wax. Can be found at Walmart and other places. It holds about 6lbs of melted wax. The temp control helps to melt the wax slowly. There is a person that has modified them with a convenient pour spout you can google. It is more cost effective solution than larger melt devices for smaller candle operations and eliminates the need for he double boiler.

Can you give me a link? We dont have Walmarts here :) And Google for "presto" gives zounds of local coffies.

  4. I am just saying. Because if anyone would quote this information, result would be scary. Here is why: 50x50x50m equals 125 000 cubic meters. Normal 50 square meters room is about 50x2.5m that is 125 cubic meters. That is a 1000x difference. Meaning that burning just 1 candle in a 50 sq. m room, emission concentration would still be 33x times bigger than in 50x50x50m :)

  5. Poking really helped with the shrink well. But I did encounter another problem after 2nd and 3rd pours. Looking from the top, candle looks fine, but looking from the side (first) I do see line of 3rd pour and (second) the rim/edge is very uneven. Why is that?

If it would be normal mould, this would be at the bottom and I could level it on a hot pan.
