  1. I do not want to drag this thread any longer, but I want to make just one more remark.

I guess you should sometimes just think about the fact that we (you and I) do not always necessarily know ALL the answers - the answer isn't always "it cannot be done, it is dangerous as death and all people who say otherwise are liars"

It is a fact that there are holistic skin care companies around and at this point I have no reason to believe that they lie about their ingredients list.

I have used that abovementioned cream and many other products from that line for more than two years and my skin is doing just fine.

But you are right - as long as we do not know the answers we should stick to safe and tested ways.

  2. People, please read my post - I said I will use a paraben-free preservative and I have been in this business long enough to know what I am doing. I started this thread just for an arguments sake. But some of you again start preaching just like to a child.

As for the Hauschka ingredients - a quote from their web page: / Our Eco-conscious packaging and natural botanical preservatives help keep products fresh without the use of chemical additives./

and one ingredients list here just as an example -

Full Ingredient List for Quince Day Cream

Water/Aqua, Prunus Armeniaca (Apricot) Kernel Oil, Anthyllis Vulneraria Extract, Pyrus Cydonia (Quince) Seed Extract, Alcohol, Daucus Carota Sativa (Carrot) Root Extract, Glycerin, Butyrospermum Parkii (Shea Butter), Prunus Amygdalus Dulcis (Sweet Almond) Oil, Olea Europaea (Olive) Fruit Oil, Cetearyl Alcohol, Persea Gratissima (Avocado) Oil, Althaea Officinalis (Marsh Mallow) Extract, Simmondsia Chinensis (Jojoba) Seed Oil, Beeswax/Cera Flava, Pyrus Cydonia (Quince) Wax, Lecithin, Bentonite, Hamamelis Virginiana (Witch Hazel) Extract, Fragrance/Parfum (Essential Oil), Citral, Citronellol, Geraniol, Limonene, Linalool, Eugenol, Benzyl Benzoate, Xanthan Gum

The only ingredients they mention to have preservative qualities are alcohol and some essential oil compounds with antimicrobial properties.

So go figure...:undecided And I am sure they know what they are doing as they have been doing this since 1940s

BUT as said - I am not saying I will do it.;)

  3. good question, dirtybird.. I know that citric acid, grapefruit seed oil, alcohol among others for example are used as preservatives. And there are others I am sure. But I do not have a recipe how to use them so that it would do the trick.

Do not worry folks, I will go and use a paraben-free preservative, but I am most certain products (and very high end indeed) are made without preservatives or they use natural ones (Dr. Hauchka for example what I myself use)

Probably what makes it possible are the high-tech sterile laboratories they use which we are not able to do.:undecided

  4. I have just started out at lotion making and have a few questions about preservatives.

I would so much like to do all my products without any preservatives - so if the lotion is packaged in a bottle with a pump, so that people will not get their hands (and with that bacteria etc.) into the bottle would it be possible to go without a preservative? Or is the lotion itself (oils & water) "programmed" to grow some nasty stuff if no preservatives are used?

I wouldn't mind a shorter shelf life - how short would you say a shelf life for preservative-free lotion would be?

    Thanks for any input.

    Best,

    Eva

  5. Thanks all!

I believe I have the Fairy dust.. tester somewhere, I will give it a try.

Maybe it is my nose, but I almost always smell fuel with citruses. and as I can smell it I am afraid others will too, so I can not use these scents.

The latest I tried was Bert's grapefruit, such a pity as the cold throw was yummy. I know vanilla helps but not always as I have found out... I could detect some vanilla notes in Bert's grapefruit also but there still was a fuel smell. Her lemon biscotti however didn't, but that really is more biscotti than lemon. But a nice scent still.

    I will continue my search...

  6. It is very nice of you to think of us!

The biggest problems are the companies who do not ship outside US or only do via UPS, because the UPS shipping is a killer.

I recently participated in a coop here for wick trimmers from a company that would not ship internationally, so it was a big help. Mineralesque took the trouble to ship to me also, thank you for that!

So maybe in the future some nice board member will be willing to do a coop for us europeans for some goods we otherwise wouldn't get our hands on?

Maybe we should start a thread about the companies/goods we would want to order but can not and if there is enough common interest there could be a coop someday...?

  7. Thanks guys,

I am mostly interested how this oil behaves in cp - I currently use BCN, which is great, but due to the low flashpoint it can only be shipped UPS, which is a pain. I see that JS version has a higher flashpoint, so if it is similar to BCN and works in cp, I would switch. Probably will need to test myself.

    Thanks anyway,

    Eva

  8. I use a few of their oils for cp soap and have always ordered ultra concentrate, but last time I ordered one in SOS as the ultra concentrate had too low flashpoint to ship via USPS - and I was very surprised, because the SOS version was even stronger/better than the ultra I had used before..

    So go figure:confused: ..

What I want to say is that the ultra concentrate is not always better, especially for B&B

  9. I will start full time this fall and quit my other job. Well actually I can call it full time now also as my "real" job is very flexible, (I work from a home office) and to think of it, even now most of my time goes to my candle/B&B business... I really feel stressed sometimes with so many orders to fill etc. so I have been looking forward to doing it "full time" soon, but now I realise that in fact I need to hire someone to help out as the time can't get much "fuller":rolleyes2

Well I do have plans to involve my mother in law in some labeling business...:wink2: She does not know it yet...
