joyofsoycandle
Hello! Havent been around here for a while, but thought id pop in with a quick question please. I use Ecosoya PB from gateway foods in dupo, il. We have tested our candles and determined which wicks were working well. As of now, I just bought a new case of this wax and the wax is acting wierd. Every candle ive made other than the votives are not burning right with our usual wicks. The votives r fine but they are burned in containers. The pillars, cupcakes, cinnamon rolls, those types of candles are burning VERY fast like a hole down the middle right away and then develope some sort of small crack in the side and leak wax out all over. Even tho they are not burning too close to the sides..they still leak out one side and burn real fast down the middle. I have seen other people on here mention that with soy especially...that sometimes there can be a bad batch. Do any of you think thats what happened? I cant figure it out. Any input appreciated! Thanks!
rjdaines
Wonder if the wax is mislabeled, is the product in the bag visually similar to the PB that you had before? Next step would be to talk with the supplier and tell them what is happening.
joyofsoycandle
Hi. Yeah its packaged same and looks same. I will call Monday, but I already dumped half the case in my melter. Have craft show on december 10th. Frustrating!!
nursenancy
It sounds like you have air bubbles. You will have to poke relief holes if that's the case. I would be willing to bet that if you cut one of your pillars open, you will have a crater in it. JMO
Lorelei
I've never had that happen to my PB....oh for sure contact them and tell them about the wax issues. You never know. One way to know that it might be PB if it is to make a tart of it, does it pop right out when it is completely set and cooled? That is just so odd. I've never ever had a bad batch of this wax. joyofsoycandle
That does make sense. We started using wick pins in our silicone molds now and when they set up there r some dips and cave in areas around the pins. So maybe we do need to poke relief holes when repouring. Wouldnt hurt anyway. Thanks for the input.
joyofsoycandle
Thanks Lorelei, i will still call them and see what they have to say.
Stella1952
Laura, how long have you been working with PB? It sounds like a wick problem with the larger containers if they are tunneling so badly. Did you get a new batch of wicks by chance?
joyofsoycandle
Hi Stella, its been at least three years that Ive been using it. I was wondering about wicks. I just bought a whole bunch of them from a different supplier, but they are the exact same type and size wicks. CD's.
Stella1952
I just bought a whole bunch of them from a different supplier, but they are the exact same type and size wicks. CD's.Do you have any of your old supply left? Only two things could be causing this: a difference in the wax or a difference in the wicks. If you are buying your PB by the case, it should be in the manufacturer's packaging with the lot/batch numbers on it.Unfortunately, wicks don't come that way. A different supplier could be using wicks that are primed with a different wick wax than you are accustomed to using. It's even possible their sizes are mixed up because one looks much like the others. I suspect your problem lies with your new batch of wicks and not the new batch of wax.For future reference:A new batch of wicks is cause to pour a test candle. A new case of wax is cause to pour a new test candle. Any new components of your candles should be tested before using them in a production run. Test ONE new thing at a time so you will know quickly if the new supply performs like the old supply did. (Don't test the new wax with the new wicks and the new FO - one thing at a time). Even from the same supplier, I never ASS-U-ME that the wicks or FO, etc. will be the same as the last batch I bought. It only takes a day for me to see if the new wax, OR wicks, OR FO will perform the same as the last supplies I purchased. It doesn't make sense to wick a hundred jars without testing ONE new wick. It doesn't make sense to dump a case of wax into a melter without testing ONE candle from the new case. Routine testing may seem like a PITA, until something like this happens and you have a lot of spoiled product and wasted labor.
elliecat
Hi Laura,I've been using ecosoya but the 135 container blend for many years and am having trouble with the recent batch as well. My boyfriend puts it in the drawer for me and he even noticed that it looked and felt different this batch is very oily. It is producing sink holes and not working with the wicks that it usually works with. The candles are extinguishing themselves within a couple of minutes, tunneling .. it is horrible. I am terribly frustrated and called them.. of course they are suggesting different technics but i know that is not it. I've been working with this long enough to know that it has to be a bad batch of wax. I have a new batch coming this week and pray that it will be okay as I have many orders and it is holiday time for us candle makers... why why why and why now!! CRAP!! Stella1952
Wait - I misread - elliecat is complaining about 135 and not PB, right? At any rate, if anyone suspects a bad batch of ANY wax, please post the Lot/ Batch numbers from the case(s) so folks can compare notes to see if there really is reason to suspect a bad batch...
