Trappeur
I've been testing fragrances these past 2 weeks for the c-3 I use. Seems lately I'm getting some duds that just don't throw and I've let them cure 7 days to 10 days. For those who use c-3 in candle jars, I would love to know of some tried and now proven for you what scents are great throwers for you. If you don't mind sharing some good scents I would appreciate it. I have a small list I made up that are wonderful throwers in the c-3 that I can share. There are lots more from different companies but here are just a few of the good ones and the bad ones. Great throwing fragrances:Candle Science................... Apple Harvest Apples and Maple Bourbon Blue Spruce Buttercream Cake Christmas Hearth Cranberry Marmalade Honeysuckle Lavender and also Lavender/Vanilla Lemon Verbena Macintosh Apple Mistletoe Scotch Pine Sweet Pea Vanilla Lace Wildeberry Mousse Fragrances that didn't throw for me:Candle Science........................ Apple Jack and Peel Brandied Pear Hansel and Gretel (I love love this scent, but just not a thrower for me...but it does well in melts...figure that one out..)Peaks................................. Amish Harvest Marijuana (I had an order from a couple of young kids for a candle that smells like Marijuana. Peaks was the company most recommended for this scent. This is the MOST NASTIEST, FOUL, DISGUSTING, fragrance I ever poured in my life. Doesn't even smell what it's supposed to smell like. When I poured the few candles I had to literally run to the basement with a mask and bandana over my nose with the pour pot covered with foil. I poured those candles so fast, ran upstairs to catch my breath that I had been holding and chucked that fragrance. DON'T buy this horrible disgusting fragrance....I don't recommend it what so ever from Peaks. I gagged over this scent and you talk about how horrible it was to get rid of the scent in the house? I use in the c-3 - all htp wicks - no dye.The containers I use are the salsa, all sizes canning jars, keepsake jars and tureens. For those people who use this wax and some of the jars above, here is what I've beenusing for years for wicks sizing that may help you. I SINGLE wick only. Never could figure out the combo to do any double wicking so I stuck with what I can do. All htp wicks:8oz tureen: 121216oz salsa: 1212 (you might squeek by with a 126 on light scents)8oz square mason: 10516oz square mason 105 and sometimes 12616oz round ball jar 12632oz ball jar 121224oz keepsake 126 (some heavy scents might need a 1212)16oz keepsake 12128oz keepsake 1212flower pot votives 83 I love Candle Science for me...I get all my jars from them with the exception of the keepsake, get my wax and my oils from them too. And the fact that they are the next state over and ship the same day, I get my orders in 2 days. And pretty much all their oils are just so beautiful and all work with only a few that don't. I can always count on that company and great customer service also. I really miss Diane who worked there, but just died recently. She was a wonderful asset to that company. Geesh, it would be nice if there was some area on this board where people could goand find out what fragrances work in their wax and we could just keep adding to the list. Maybe a moderator will see this....I think it would help a lot of people out and maybe cut down expenses of ordering oils that won't perform or at least give a heads up...Well, that's what I think... Candybee
Fillmore Containers tests all their FOs in C3. That is the only wax they sell BTW. I don't use C3 but have used CB135 and the FOs I used threw very good to excellent. Only FO that didn't throw for me was their Amish Friendship Bread. Stella1952
I agree it would be nice to have a reference by wax type, but wicking and containers play a part in it too...For example, I use C3, CDN wicks, 3" diameter, 8 oz. widemouth canning jars (generally) CS AppleJack & Peel throws well for me. CS Lavender vanilla thows awesomely, even though their site only gives it 2 leaves (I dislike that rating system)Sometimes even with the same wax, people have very different results and their individual perceptions are often quite subjective. Unless I am having trouble with a FO and want to see if there's a different supplier for it, or I'm just looking for something new, I don't put a lot of stock in fragrance reviews. AlwaysWondering
Hi!What a very, very nice post! You took so much time and thought and wonderful of you to share and "pay it forward" so to speak. Lots of people, will no doubt, appreciate your reviews. I don't use C3 plus I don't make candles. I wish I could help and hope you get plenty of replies with the recommendations you are looking for.
Trappeur
Well, I tried......lol....I thought it was going to be a long shot in the dark...but I had some time on my hands today (not really) and was just frustrated with some of the oils...That does make sense Stella about different throws and how they all pertain to the wicking...Now that I think about it, you said Apple Jack works for you? Well I guess if I had found the perfect wick to wick the porcelain cup in it, it probably would have thrown...hmmmm - the mug was too big for the wick and it has been struggling for days! Why didn't I even think about that.....hmmm...Dang, I forgot I poured 10 days ago the Apple Jack in a mason jar and haven't even tested that...I bet it works.....Well, I'm lighting that puppy now...Speaking of cdn wicks Stella....those cdn 20 wicks are working in the country comfort jar...unbelievable after all these years and with just 1 wick too.I just double wicked the 16oz country comfort jar a couple days ago and used 2 cd 6's...Same ole thing...those black swirly rings around the wick. Plus the wicks were too hot. Probably need a cd 4 which I don't have. I've come to the conclusion I just don't do doubles! lol No matter what wick I try those rings magically appear within 5 minutes...I prefer single anyway. But I'm loving those cdn's as you suggested and going to get some. You said I'd probably be able to single wick that jar in a cdn 18 or 20 and yep it worked! Thanks.Something very interesting I came upon. I went to order Vanilla Voodoo from Candle Cocoon and was checking out their site and they carry the cdns. But geezum crow, 25cents a wick? Isn't that a little steep? Wow! I'm used to paying 8.00 to 9.00 for a bag of a hundred htp wicks.I also read this on their site about the cdns which was very interesting (for me)....I copied and pasted here.Due to increased efficiency in burning CDN wicks may burn cleaner in natural waxes.CDN wicks were invented in Germany for use in steric acid candles. They are the same size as corresponding CD wicks but they are soaked in a different finishing solution that helps to neutralize the acidic properties of natural candles. You may find that a CDN will burn out an inch further then its regular CD counter part. For instance, the CD18 will burn out to about 3" in EL soy container with Vanilla Voodoo but a CDN18 will burn 4" in diameter in the EL soy container!!!! Due to increased efficiency in burning CDN wicks may burn cleaner in natural waxes.I also read up on what they said about Cd wicks as below which I copied and pasted..........CD WICK GENERAL RULE OF THUMBCD wicks seem to need an increase in size of one for every 1/4" increase in diameter size of candle. We count sizes as CD3, CD4, CD5, CD6, CD8, CD10, CD12, CD14,CD16,CD18,CD20,CD22. So going from a CD20 to a CD22 would could as one size increase. For example, if you are using a CD4 in an Autumn Apple™ 2" diameter votive then you will probably need CD8 in a 3" candle. This was 4 size changes (1"=4 (1/4"))Candy I didn't know Fillmore does all their testing in C-3. I get my wax from them too but have never tried their oils...only their Christmas Tree which is actually Balsam Fir as I've been using that scent for years...I'll definitely have to get some of their oils...Thanks so much for that heads up.Thanks Always Wondering for your nice comment about the looonnnggg post...lolI just saw that movie a couple weeks ago "Pay it forward".....I loved it....I watched it 5 times! Since I don't have a t.v. I get to watch movies and I'm tired of watching things 20 times each...lolTrappeur Edited September 1, 2011 by Trappeur
moonshine
Hi Trappeur-I have been away from the forum for awhile- This is our busiest time of year with our "real" business and I now have a little time to get back to candles and check out what's going on!I have been using 464 for some time now but recently decided to try the C3 - I was curious to see if it DID throw better.I have only tested 3 fragrances so far and I did NOT use any additives and I use CD wicks with 9% FO -In the 8 ounce square mason jar I tested Peaks Downy Fresh with a CD10 and it was awesome- VERY strong, beautiful tops and excellent flame-same jar with a CD 10 also, I tried NG cracklin Birch (LOVE this fragrance) and it was a complete dud- no throw and very greasy like in texture- I think I may have to cut back FO load and wick up to a 12 on that-same jar with a CD 10 also, I tried CS mistletoe and that to was awesome- strong and excellent flameI thought the same about candle cocoon- very over priced for the CDN wicks and I have not been able to find them anywhere else without having to buy a 1000 at a time- I am very curious if they would burn better in the C3 AND 464I have not tested enough of the C3 wax yet to know if I like it better- I am probably crazy for even trying it seeing that I have the 464 down pretty well....but THANK YOU for sharing your information- That is very helpful and generous of you! I just may try some of the CS fragrances in C3 because I have most of them already here and waiting for something!oh and I did try the Marijuana!! LOL it is soooooo gross- I wanted to barf....thankfully I only tried the 1 ounce in melts and threw them right out the door!and I agree- it would be very nice to have more information like this shared:)
Stella1952
Hey Moonshine...not been able to find them anywhere else without having to buy a 1000 at a timeSouthwest bought out JBN and is expanding their selection of CDNs - check 'em out.Trapp, glad the CDNs are working out for you. CCs prices are quite high for those wicks, but, like you, I want to try some of their FOs... Edited September 1, 2011 by Stella1952
