cottonshed
Hi! I am new to this forum and am seeking your help. I have been making jar candles for 8 years now and have always used J223 wax. I recently tried a new lid which is metal with a rubber fitment. Now, my candles have zero cold scent throw, which is unusual for J223. I think I smell the rubber on the lids instead.Has anyone tried these lids? Candybee
I haven't tried those particular lids but I do use J233. I had problems when I made jelly jars and used the 2 piece canning lids that come with the jars. I found that my cold throw would disappear after a few weeks using the canning lids and sometimes the candles themselves would have an off cold throw. So I switched lids and started getting them from Fillmore container that would fit; metal with plastisol linings. Worked great. Candles always smelled good and retained their cold throw.
cottonshed
I'm glad to hear that maybe I haven't lost my mind. I thought it sounded crazy that a lid could mess up your cold scent throw. I love metal lids and this was the first time I found one with a fitment. I'll check Fillmore, never ordered from them before.
deb426
I had that happen one time when I made a candle just for my personal use in a little apothecary jar that had a glass top with a plastic liner. It took on the icky smell of the plastic liner but smelled normal when burning. I finally just threw it away.
cottonshed
Darn smelly lids! I was totally excited when they came out with these new metal lids, for years I have used the metal ones without fitments. I knew that J223 had recently slightly changed and I hadn't used it since then so I was hoping it wasn't the wax. I have a fundraiser coming up soon and non smelling candles is not a turn on. IwantItgreen
I like the look of those lids! Willing to share where you found them? Wondering if they would work fine with another wax
cottonshed
Sure! Got them from Candles and Supplies. They come in black, rust, and maybe zinc, with a plain top, ring on top, or a handle. I did however just find the same lids that do not have a fitment. Can't remember where that was at... I'll look for them.
Stella1952
I use the two-piece lids (seal & jar ring) that come with my canning jars (8 oz. Kerr & Ball wide mouth masons mfg. by Jardin) and have never had a problem with either the lids having an odor or the sealant robbing the candle of fragrance. These are the same lids (and containers) one buys in the grocery store for canning purposes.I can see how a natural rubber seal might have an odor or absorb some odor from the candle, but I don't think a product designed for use with food storage or preserving would have this flaw... very strange.
