xxxtennillexxx
Is there a general rule of thumb for the amount of flavoring to use in lip balm? I got a base, flavoring and sweetener a couple days ago and I have no clue how much I should add. The website said to add "a few drops" but it didn't say how much base to use. I added 5 drops of flavoring and 2 drops of sweetener to 1ounce of base and you couldn't taste or smell it at all. The next time I tried 10 drops of flavoring and 5 drops of sweetener and I could barely smell it and just barely taste any difference. Should I keep adding more or did I maybe get some not-so-great flavoring???
Scented
Well my starting point is 2 tsps to 4 oz of my base and then I go from there. I'd say try some more flavoring ... skip on the sweet stuff until you get something and then decide if it needs to be sweetened. Hard to say if you got any not-so-great flavoring when only you know what you got.
Kitn
Does your supplier have any info on their site?
xxxtennillexxx
Scented, I got the flavoring from NG. Here's what their website says..."Oil-based Flavoring for use in oil-based cosmetic products. FDA approved for cosmetic use, and for consumption. NOT sweetened. Simply add a few drops of flavoring to your oil-based cosmetic product." I'll try adding some more and see what happens...I'm making it for my girls (3&4) and they asked why it didn't taste like berries. Unhappy customers! I'll keep adding and hopefully they will eventually be able to taste it! Thanks!
CareBear
I use 1-3% depending on the flavor and the supplier. Go easy with cherry, though - get a touch high and it's really drying (same might be true of others). Also a sweetener will increase the impact of the flavors - making them seem brighter (IME). Hope something works for you. Keep track of how much you end up adding so you'll have an idea in the future. Can't have unhappy girls. ah-soy
Here's a bit of advice from the Oregon Trails site:http://www.oregontrailsoaps.com/tips_n_tricks.phpI use more the amount that Carebear uses too...I use the liquid Stevia sweetener from Southern Soapers and a little of that goes a long way.
