ah-soy
Has anyone ever swapped out kokum butter for cocoa butter in a recipe? I've never used Kokum and am wanting to play with it. How does the hardness compare? How about the slip and slide factor?I've found a couple of post that say it is less greasy.

ah-soy
Thanks gran. I'm an occasional soap maker (very occasional ) but I do love shea butter in the one recipe I make.I'm actually playing with the kokum in lip balms, but you're right - the properties are similar. I read that Kokum isn't pore clogging but cocoa butter can be so thinking that may be the way to go.
8-GRAN-ONES
yes i have read where some say cocoa causes breakouts..i have used all the butters..i cant' tell any of them cause me any trouble..i lov them all..
CareBear
yes i have read where some say cocoa causes breakouts..i have used all the butters..i cant' tell any of them cause me any trouble..i lov them all..In soaps I love cocoa butter and haven't tried kokum, but in bath products I've had to abandon cocoa butter due to the huge zits it gives me on my back and chest. ack!!!! kapangan did the same. kokum doesn't do this so I use that sometimes blended with a little mango or hydrog soy to make it melt more quickly in the bath. TheWickedWick
I'm almost out of Cocoa butter and have been thinking of using this in it's place in my lip balms and my m&p goat milk soap. It's also a bit cheaper too which is a plus! If you've used it in lip balms..how's it do compared to cocoa butter? Can you tell a difference? I have a lip balm recipe I love so I'm hoping the Kokum Butter doesn't change it any.
8-GRAN-ONES
i have not used it in lip balms...i don't make them..yet..but i have read good things about it in lip balms..also mango..and hi reviews of babassu in lip balms..lip balms is my next project..i want to make flavored ones..but i am still doing my homework..i have made, and really like my lotion bars, so I don't think there will be alot of changes.. CareBear
the melting point is a tiny bit higher for the kokum, I think, which matters in a bath. hardness I see them about the same, tho kokum seems less lubricating which is also why I add the other. ah-soy
Thanks for that info. I'm going to try subbing it for the cocoa butter in my lip balm recipe so if the melt point is a bit higher that is what I'm looking for. I love my recipe, but it's a little "soft in the pocket". CareBear
ah yes, that can be a problem - and adding more beeswax adds that drag. try subbing in some candelilla wax for part of the beeswax - it's kinda slick and has a high melting point. Kitn
I love kokum in lotion and lip balm, but can't tell the difference between kokum and cocoa butter in soap.
