Paraffin wicks (other than zinc core)

Recommended Posts

Back in the 90's I had paraffin wax tweaked by a local man. He has since passed away and I was never able to figure out what his magic formula was. It really didn't matter that much since I embarked on using soy. But now I have the itch to get back to the paraffin. I've accumulated quite a few FO's that didn't meet expectations in the soy and want to test them in paraffin.

4786 was the base paraffin he tweaked for me ... so I'm going to stick with it for now. Even though it's a 2-pour it is what I'm used to. I always used the 44-24-18Z wick in the old days and accepted that some mushrooming and soot would be the norm.

Now I'm reading about some of you using LX and HTP wicks (among others.) Are they really better than the old zinc's?

I have a collection of almost every popular type of wick that I can use for testing. Any recommendations where to start for an 8oz Jelly Jar?

Would love to get any recommendations; it's like dealing with a new wax again!

Thanks

For a jelly jar you can start with an LX 10 or 12 and for CD's a 5 or 6.

I wonder if he didn't tweak the wax by adding a little Crisco to it. I remember when that was the 'in' additive to use in parrafin to boost hot throw and diminish wet spots.

You can always try adding a little soy for a parasoy blend. They make really great candles and you would still be working with soy.

Thanks for the starting point. I've got some RRD's and HTP's on hand too. Wondering if anyone is using the Paper Core...

Off to search the archives about using Crisco as an additive ... anybody here still using it?

Thanks!
