latch
theres a salon in town who let me put her candles in her shop, she said not to worry about a percentage, just maybe a few candles every now and then, today i went and one of the hairdressers said that the owner said we maybe could work something out where the hairdressers there could get a discount on candles.. i never did this before... she said that a lady that sells necklaces there gives them 2.00 off...there are about 5 or 6 hairdressers there. any suggestions would be appreciated.thanks
sudsnwicks
It sounds like the owner would prefer to have a discount for her and her employees in lieu of a consignment fee. I'd go for it, though would suggest getting the terms (how many % off, and confirming there is no consignment fee) in writing to make sure she doesn't try to increase the discount or levy a fee later on. sockmonkey
Do those hairdressers give you a discount on their services? I would encourage a reciprocal agreement and see how they like that.
gerrie
I agree with sudsnwick, get it on paper, and make sure she's fair.
angied
Do you normally give a % off each candle you sell for consignment or off the total amount? If you give that % off to her and her stylists wouldnt that be about the same thing? And definately get everything in writing.Angie
sudsnwicks
It would amount to the same thing for the owner; for her employees they'd be paying full price as the consignment fee is pocketed by the owner. From your perspective it would amount to the same thing, provided the discount % equals the consignment fee.
Jeana
I think it would be worth it to give 1 or 2 dollars off to the stylist. Most stylist like to sell products. If they like yours, their clients will know about it. Stylists love to talk too. You'll sell way more in the end. If they don't get a chance to use your products, they will likely sit on the shelves and collect dust. Like everyone else says, it would be best to define the rules, in writing.Just out of curiosity, how do you keep track of what you sell there? I have an opportunity to do this at the salon I work at, but we can't figure out how to keep my sales separate from the salons. If anyone has any tips on this I would love to know more about consignment options. I'm not in a position to do wholesale yet.

I have an opportunity to do this at the salon I work at, but we can't figure out how to keep my sales separate from the salons. A simple way would be to have a separate sales log for recording your stuff which was sold in the salon. That is how the salon owner where I used to have consignment did it. Hers was a small salon, so it was simple enough to do it in this manual way.
latch
Initially i was going to offer 15 or 20% consignment fee. I also said before they asked for a discount i would give them candles to burn in the salon. if they burn a candle 8 hrs a day that would be a candle a week just about. should i still offer that too? I have not figured out a system yet to keep track of everything. its really slow right now. my candles have been2 weeks and only sold 3. i guess it would be great advertising (word of mouth) i was thinking doing 15% off. that would be 1.50 off 10.00 jar and 1.20 off the 8.00 jar and 2.10 off the 14.00 jar. does that sound ok or should i do 20%... angied
Myself personally I would offer them one or the other. Which way works out best for you?Angie
