Going2Adopt
I GM is great in soap but I would like to try it out in lotion since I have a cheap source of it. What do you all think? I am thinking of subbing it for 50-75% of the water I would normally use.
mystical_angel1219
I love love love any type milk in a body product. With that high of a ratio in milk- I'd suggest doing several in-depth tests on the preservative system over different periods of time and conditions. Even sending it out for lab testing if you sell. Fresh ingredients- even bottled aloe juice, are quite taxing on the shelf life.
ChrisR
All the recipes I've seen for GM lotion say you shouldn't use more than 10% GM because of the preservative problems. Using it at 50 - 75% could be asking for trouble usless you lab test it.
Going2Adopt
If I try it out at that high and decide I like it I will definitely have it lab tested. Since I can get fresh gm so cheap I didn't think about this at first but I wonder if canned gm would be better in this application?
heirloomoriginals
I like using the powdered because then you don't have quite as much worry over shelf life. I know it might be more expensive, but much less hassle.Steph
adillenal
I have been experimenting with my fresh goat milk for over a year and have used goat milk as high as 50% in my experiments. They are holding up so far and some are over a year old. I have read a lot about only using 10% but I like to try new things. I do use two preservatives. When I reach the perfect lotion formula using a high amount of goat milk, I will be ready to lab test for pathogens. Right now I am testing for separation, color issues, texture etc. I am getting closer to the perfect formula using 40% fresh goat milk. cindym
If you are using gm in lotion you need to use a food preservative like EDTA as well as a presevative for the rest of you ingredients.
