Jeana
When doing the lye calculator, can I use shortening as soy wax and still get my calculations correct? Or does anyone know of a lye calculator that has soy wax as one of the listed ingredients?
Vio
I just found one for myself. Funny you should ask! LOL No idea if it's good or not, but it does specifically say soy wax. No idea if they mean raw soy with no additives, but it does say soy wax. http://www.thesage.com/calcs/lyecalc2.php
Flicker
The MMS calculator is very easy to use and works very well. I've used that one myself for years. Interestingly enough the SAP value for soybean oil is SAP Value: .135 / .189 and 100% soybean flakes are also SAP Value: .135 / .189 so in reality just plugging it as soybean oil should be fine. For giggles however I did check the MMS site and they have diff lye amounts for each, which makes no sense what so ever unless they are assuming they have a 20% concentration of cottonseed in them...which not all do. I'd just plug for the actual soy oil in this case, which I've always done and call it a day As long as you are using a 100% soy wax that is
topofmurrayhill
I'd say just take your pick. The SAP value of soy wax or hydrogenated soy is in the 190-195 KOH range. The products vary in that range and so do the lye calculators. No way to really know what will get you the closest.
