Tall Blonde
Ok. I made some lotion yesterday and it still seems pretty runny, so I need some help.75% water14% oils/butters3% ewax2% stearicthen I put in 2% wheat protein2% sodium lactate1% cornstarch1% cyclodid I use enough stearic and ewax? Will it thicken some more? I'm going to use it the way it is anyway, but I'm just wondering how I should tweak the numbers. I may lower the water a bit.Opinions! CBE
I'm still fightin' with how to do lotions/creams too... but IMO... I'd cut down the water to 60%, I see your adding more liquid with the wheat protein, sodium lactate, and cyclo... maybe this is what is making your lotion runny, not sure. Or maybe you can up your e-wax to 5% and stearic to 4% and leave the water percentage and additives percentage alone. Maybe someone else who knows a little bit more might chime in..... Tall Blonde
I make a cream that's 60% water and 20% oils/butters and it's super thick (like frosting!). Maybe if I cut the water down to 70% or so, up the ewax & stearic a bit?
SpaceGirl
Tall Blonde -- I ran your numbers in comparison to mine and they look pretty similar. My lotion tends to be a touch on the thick side - sqeezable but not runny. I use a touch more cornstarch (about 1.5%) but the other numbers look pretty close. For your 14% oils and butters what's the breakdown of your oils and butters? Mine is 35% butters and 65% oils. I don't use the wheat protein or sodium lactate, so I don't have any idea how those are affecting the consistency (sorry). The only other suggestion / question is how long are you blending? I can control the thickness of my emulsion (to a certain extent) based on how long I use the stick blender.
Tall Blonde
I usually go a little higher than 50% butters to oils. I used shea butter, mango, butter, sunflower oil and olive oil in this one. As to how long I mixed it, I can't say. I mix it until I think it's well blended, then I alternate mixing and resting until it cools enough to add the preservative.I think my numbers were just off. My previous lotion had 75% water, 17% oils/butters, 3% ewax and 2% stearic, 2% clyco and apparently no cornstarch and I think that worked out ok. I'd like to put the cornstarch in though. I think the wheat protein threw me off. I bought it for my shampoo bars and should probably just stick with that.
Ann M
My lotion recipe is thick, but still pumpable. I use 66- 68% water, 4% ewax and 3% cetyl alcohol or stearic. I also add 3% hydrovance, 9% butters, 12% oils and the rest preservative and fragrance. This is a nice basic recipe and easy to make if you follow proper lotion making techniques.Ann M
Tall Blonde
Well, it's thinner than I'd like, but I'm just labeling it Light & Lovely Hand Lotion and going with that. I just never considered the wheat protein and cyclo to be part of the water phase. Yet another brain fart on my end. I should just stick with the recipe I already have!!!
