Playing with Palm Wax

Recommended Posts

I decided to make one for me. Without reading any instructions, I used a 26oz. apothecary jar with double wicks. I just poured it at 175 degrees, no color ,just scent. Let is set up. I was gougous. All crytalized without heating jars, or doing anything special. Took it home to burn it. I loved it. It burned leaving a little on the outside to show its affect. I thought.....nothing to it. THEN.......I noticed it was burning thru the pretty edge of the wax and making a belt around the candle that was clear. It was too hot for that area. It ruined the affect. So now I am going to read the instructions. It looked good for awhile, and smelled wonderful. I want to mess with this stuff. But I Think I will wait until I have time. I really think I can sell this stuff. Any input is welcomed. :yay:

Palm wax is really fun stuff, IMHO. You need to decide whether you want the candle to leave a shell or consume itself totally. Because of its propensity toward tunneling, to me, it is easier to "go with the flow" and wick for leaving a shell.

I have only been pouring palm containers for a couple of months with Glass Glow and I am lukewarm about it. It DOES make a beautiful candle, but getting a clean burn on it is difficult without getting the container too warm. I dunno what all the manufacturers put into it to make it for containers, but I find it kinda limiting. I don't think palm wax is a "natural" for containers - it makes much better pillars. :D Those are fun because one can vary the temperature of the wax when pouring layers to achieve different effects. Depending on the pouring temp, the wax can range from very hard and clear with some translucency to heavily crystallized like quartz rock. Glass Glow has other stuff in it and doesn't seem to be as flexible in this regard.

Palm wax doesn't always require a larger wick than a comparable soy product. It burns best very slowly but steadily, so a big flame is not desirable. It just gobbles up the wax and causes blowouts. From reading here, I think a lot of folks overwick palm wax.

I think you will have a LOT of fun with it and along the way, make some very marketable projects. :D

I am in love with Candlewic's palm pillar wax. Ask Chandler aka Bill Binder has been so helpful. I've been testing several fragrances and finally have 5 that are a "go". I love the look of this wax and everyone who has seen my pillars says the same thing.....WOW...those are really cool looking.

Just a little FYI. I was a Candlwic customer back in 2001 and then slowly moved away from ordering from them. Recently I started ordering again and I am VERY satisfied with their products and I have always had excellent customer service from them.

Sure wish WE could see a photo of your pillars, Maggie! How's about posting a picture or two?:wink2:

My Christmas Open House will be in 2 weeks. I'll see if hubby will take some pictures and IF I can figure out how to post them here I will do that. I can't take a decent picture to save my life...and when it comes to uploading pictures and posting them...I'm dumber yet. LOL
