momtohaley2004
Is there a such thing as candle nose? I honestly can't smell my candles and everyone else can. Hubby thinks I'm crazy when I say I can't smell my own product.

HeavenScentU
I can't seem to smell either. But I can smell something if it smells bad. My DIL is complaining either she can't smell anything. I am going to start sniffing coffee beans and see if that helps clear out my nose....
artcwolf
Coffee beans works wonders, I am constantly using the wifes coffee to clear my nose. I also go outside for about 15 minutes or so....I'm also thinking candle nose is part of my scent issue, i've brought in more test candles for my tester and she can smell them perfectly. AnjieBurdett
Whats the deal with coffee beans then? Do you just have a wiff every now and then or do you have to keep a jar of it strapped to your face for an hour Anjie,x.
grama
No Angie - I'am going to just drink it all day long:yay: :yay: I keep a jar with a lid like you use for smelly jellies sitting around. It helps when customers come in. I don't much smell my candles either. The best place for me to smell them is my Mother's.I buy the cheap dollar store brand for this, wouldn't dare think of wasting my Folgers

Stella1952
Yes. This is a real condition. Read here to understand:http://www.candletech.com/comparingscentthrow.htmCoffee bean sniffing will help clear your nose when sampling, but it will not prevent candlenose after pouring. Pam W
Is there a such thing as candle nose? I honestly can't smell my candles and everyone else can. Hubby thinks I'm crazy when I say I can't smell my own product.I ordered a bottle of Pumkpin from Peaks and couldn't smell anything OOB, in the pot or any cold or hot throw. It was like someone had filled the bottle with water -- I mean no scent at all. I had gotten FOs from 3 different suppliers that week and could smell everything expect the Peak's Pumpkin. Even had a bottle of Bert's pumpkin that I could smell - it was really strong. I emailed Peaks and Nachelle responded that I should set it back for a day or two because I had been working with cinnamon a lot and it can kill the sense of smell. I did what she suggested, lit the candle again a couple days later and it was throwing like crazy. So yes, candle nose does is real.
VerticallyEnhanced
The article is so dead on. Many of us make candles where we also live, where we are always exposed to it. I liken it to my parent's house. My parents house (where I lived from the age of 5-19) has a certain smell. It is not a "bad" smell, but just their smell. Now, when I go home, I walk in and it is like "Oh cool! I am home!" When we come home and open the suitcase, my kids will even say, "Oh it smells like Mimi and Papa's house!" My parents don't smell it and I never noticed it when I lived there. But now that I am desensitized, it can pick it out in a heartbeat.edited to add...that is why I make four candles every time I test a scent. I keep one to burn for checking out the wicking and the other three are farmed out to testers who I really trust. Plus they are nice enough to put up with my anal five page testing package. lol... Candybee
I have been having the worst case of candle nose for weeks during the craft show season. I have to constantly replenish my candles I sold so I am forever pouring candles each week on my days off. Also, when I test burn some of my candles I can't smell them but my friends and customers who burn them tell how good they smell. Its pretty embarrassing when you can't smell your candles. Strange how this doesn't happen to me when I pour my M&P soap all day. I use more fragrance oils, EOs, and combos of oils than I do with candles. But its the candlemaking that makes my sniffer go out of whack.
Candleman67
OH yes I thought I was crazy. I am Just getting my candles down, but I thought man they don't even smell and I add 1oz of FO by weight to 1 LB of wax. But everyone else says they smell great. Maybe I'll get some coffee to smell. LOL..... nothing like sniffing coffee.
Stella1952
Maybe I'll get some coffee to smell. LOL..... nothing like sniffing coffee.I KNOW it sounds strange and it won't help with candle nose, but when you get a bunch of new samples in and ya wanna have a sniffathon, it really WORKS to inhale the coffee deeply between FO sniffs! Unless they are coffee, of course... Ground coffee works better for me than beans.
