Potpourri Protection

Hope this is the right place to ask this. Many times I see primitive-type potpourri in treenware or tinwares and its right in the item. I notice that if you use the scented type it can damage the item - so, for all these pictures you see on the web are they only using dry non-scented "fixin" type stuff or is there some other trick? I've used varies things as "liners" - but it either fails after a while or shows and doesn't look good.

Thanks!
