Lightning Bug Posted July 6, 2007 Posted July 6, 2007 Hi. I'm new to paraffin and canes. Made one I didn't like and then tried this one with fabric. When I poured out the center wax, it was foamy. I liked the over all effect, except I did get the material to high and couldn't even it out and smooth down the top no matter what I tried as the strands stuck up. The candle in the lighted one was pretty pathetic, but only small one I had. So, do you think the foam was due to the sizing and washing it first would prevent it or? If anyone else has tried fabric, please help! Can't afford to throw out that much wax each time. BethNew to adding pics...they came out on top Quote
Donita Posted July 6, 2007 Posted July 6, 2007 Well......I think that the wax looked foamy probably due to it being cool. As far as the threads....you can buy a product that seals the frayed edges. It is like a glue and comes in a little squeeze bottle. I haven't done fabric but if I did I would mark out the size of fabric I wanted to use. Then go over that line with the fray glue. Let it dry and then cut on the line so it is perfectly straight with sharp sissors. I like the idea of fabric.....now you know I will have to try one too (smile).... Donita ps....why throw out the wax....remelt and take out the fabric and re use the wax. Quote
Lightning Bug Posted July 6, 2007 Author Posted July 6, 2007 Hi Donita...It was just so foamy when I poured out the center, that I figured the wax was bad. So, I dumped it. Maybe I should have waited and it would have gone away or skimmed it. The material was like nylon or some type of scarf material that was see-through...it was even hard to hold to cut straight. LOL. So I will try your idea. Might make it easier cutting too. Getting it adhered was a bit harder than I thought as the cut edges sort of grabbed each other and wouldn't come apart very easily. I thought maybe there would be to much wax between on the last bit, but it did ok. I did make the cane thinner and am fairly pleased with it thanks to you. Beth Quote
