This was an experiment, to see what kind of soap butterfat would make.

I used clarified butter (20%), coconut oil (20%) hydrogenated soybean oil (54%) and shea butter and grape seed oil (3% each) for super fatting. Used room temperature technique as described by eugenia in the “Oh gosh, wish me luck!” thread in Soap Making forum (except no fo, I added infused oil and botanicals at the end). Moved very fast, though did not seize up.

My question is the color. It’s rather translucent now. The color variations in the picture is from different angles as the light is hitting it. I thought the soybean oil produced a white soap. A small dab that was left over that I saved (and didn’t gel) is opaque. Is this from the butterfat?

Scent is from bay infused olive oil, orange peal, hibiscus, and jasmine (bay rum). So far smells good, like the aftershave my grandma made for grandpa when I was a kid.

It looks great! The color looks fine; it looks natural and natural = good. Last show I had a request from a gentleman for Bay Rum. I've never tried it and he described it exactly as you did. He was a hard sell, interested in nothing else, LOL.

I really don't care much for titanium dioxide, but if you want a very white bar, that will do the trick. When the soap is used, the lather looks very chalky on your skin, although it rinses just fine.

Other than that, I've found that a very light colored base oil with coconut and lots of lard (25-40%) will give pretty light results, although not pure white.

Wowzers that is an awesome looking soap. I agree with eugenia that it looks very natural. Love the look!! :yay:I'm so glad it turned out for you. Have you tried it all? I know you just unmolded it but I will usually wash my hands with a small sliver of new soap or from what is left on my hands after I unmold and cut.

I’m glad it’s normal. This is only my fourth batch of CP, and the previous 3 all came out opaque, very solid looking. This is the first to come out translucent. It looks like very watery milk. Ok, off white very watery milk.

Meredith, I just went in and tested a piece of trimming… and nice. The lather is like bubbly hand lotion. And the bay rum smell stuck to my hands, but I think I detected a hint of the rotted cheese smell I think it was CareBear mentioned when I first asked about butterfat in soap. We will see what happens…

I’m glad everyone likes the way it looks. If/when (with or without the butter) I make this again I think I will infuse the oil with botanicals and strain it and add more botanicals to swirl with. I REALLY like the way the sweet green tea looks and think if I do it that way I can get a similar effect.

euginia, bay rum is easy... and a wonderful scent, you'll love it.

And thank you creative... my next attempt will be to try and duplicate your second soap. The lovely lemon custard looking one. Well, with my own twist LOL... we shall see what happens...

I actually had a dream last night that I made a soap and added Green Tea leaves in the batch. :laugh2: I guess addiction makes you dream about it also. LOL I woke up thinking... WOW.... gonna have to add this to my "to do" list. LOL I love the idea of soapin' with Green Tea leaves. I'm wondering if you replace the water with Green Tea for your lye solution.... will it turn the soap brown? Hmmm.... I'm gonna go have to research this. I have some Jasmine Green Tea.... delicious.... I'd love to try and soap with this.

Green tea and jasmine sounds wonderful! May I borrow your idea?

Sure Grandma! :highfive: Just make sure you post pics of it so we can see!!

Now, if you'll excuse me.... I'm going brew me a cup of Jasmine Green Tea!! I better save some off the side for my next soapin' adventure. ;)

Update... smelling very funky, like limbuger cheese. I'm going to put it away someplace to age where I can't smell it and hope the smell breaks down. The funny thing is you can only smell the cheese on the soap, if i wash my hands with it the lather and my hands smell like bay rum. at this point i'm thinking don't waste supplies to make this.
