lsbennis Posted June 28, 2007 Posted June 28, 2007 I got a sample of this wax the other day from CS and the info on their site said that it can only hold 5%-6% FO...well let me tell you I put in 6% and poured a few candles yesterday and now there is fo seeping out all over the place... it makes a really cool looking mottled container candle but I'm sure there is something I can add to it to help with the fo, I'm going to call CS today and see what they suggest but if anyone has had any experience with this wax and wants to share...:rolleyes2 Quote
lsbennis Posted June 28, 2007 Author Posted June 28, 2007 wow...that is not much FO...I wonder if you can even get a scent out of it at that percent! Quote
lindsaycb Posted June 28, 2007 Posted June 28, 2007 Yep, top is right on that one. But it does throw well. Quote
topofmurrayhill Posted June 28, 2007 Posted June 28, 2007 Certainly you can. Not from every FO of course. Quote
lsbennis Posted June 28, 2007 Author Posted June 28, 2007 Yep, top is right on that one. But it does throw well.Wow...you are right...I couldnt wait to cure so Im burning my candles I poured last night...after the initial smoking from the seeping fo...lol...it seemed to calm down and I'm getting a great HT from it...using Blueberry Breezer from JS...and I normally don't get good results with JS! I would say in MHO that the 1288 throws just as good as the 4627 I have been testing and not nearly the mess...it is more like cutting bricks then vasaline...:rolleyes2 I called CS today and they said that I should add the FO and pour at a higher temp and it should be able to hold the 6%...if not they said a little bit of Stearic should do the trick. Ok...off to the lab to see if I can get this puppy to take the full 6%...:tiptoe: :tiptoe: :tiptoe: Quote
lsbennis Posted June 29, 2007 Author Posted June 29, 2007 Just an update....I added my FO at 195 and poured at 190 and it really did help absorb more of the FO but I still had some seepage so Im going to try the Stearic next and that should take care of it...this wax is really interesting and has great CT and HT...the only other issue I have is that as it cools it contracts and sinks at the wick so I guess I will have to do a repour unless I can figure out how to prevent that. Quote
topofmurrayhill Posted June 29, 2007 Posted June 29, 2007 You must always do two pours with this wax, otherwise your wick will be sitting in a depression, not to mention a puddle of FO gunk. You won't get rid of the seepage from your first pour. Mottling causes paraffin to sweat fragrance oil. It's a normal phenomenon. You can remove some if it's excessive, but basically it just gets covered and dispersed by the second pour.Stearic doesn't especially increase the fragrance load, but it may seem to do so because the wax will mottle slightly less ferociously and hence you'll get less seepage as the first pour cools off. One trade-off is that the wax will contract more, so you may get a deeper sink hole and more separation from the glass. You can experiment with the amount to get the results you prefer. The FO is not so tightly bound to the wax in this sort of candle, compared to using something like Vybar as an additive, hence the burn quality can degrade as the amount of FO increases. More fragrance tends to necessitate a larger wick to avoid drowning out and to keep mushrooms at bay.Good luck and have fun. Quote
lsbennis Posted June 29, 2007 Author Posted June 29, 2007 Thanks Top...that is some really good info...when I spoke with CS they said to add about 1.5 to 2 tsp of stearic pp that should be just enough to help with the seepage but not enough to stop the mottling so I'm going to give that a try and see what happens. As I was making more candles yesterday I realized that they were similar in appearance to Palm Wax which I also have a sample of from CS...so many waxes so little time...:rolleyes2Top...do you know if any of the bigger companies use this type of wax cause it looks real similar to Yankme! Quote
topofmurrayhill Posted June 30, 2007 Posted June 30, 2007 Yankme does have mottled containers. Maybe not the exact same paraffin but along the same lines. I doubt they have anywhere near 6% FO in them. Select your strongest scents and try not to go overboard. You may have misheard or someone at CS may have misspoken, but a few teaspoons pp of stearic will hardly do a thing. That should be tablespoons. Try varying the amount a bit so you see the range of results you can get. Quote
