Making UPC #s for products?

Hello! Does anyone have any experience doing this? I have a chain store that is going to be carrying my items and they require me to have UPC on my things. What does that mean? Or how do they work? Do I just make them up myself and put them on the products, or do I need to go thru some computer system? Thanks!!!

There is a company that does it. But that is all I know. Sorry I know, not much help

You will need to apply to the UCC to get a manufacturer ID number. Then you can use a program to generate the actual bar code.
