ChandlerJane Posted January 6, 2007 Posted January 6, 2007 I'm using Ecos presently and was wondering which wicks would be most like them? I ask because I want more options in terms of sizes. Some of the Eco's are spaced very far apart (BIG difference for example, between Eco 0.5 and Eco 1). Quote
topofmurrayhill Posted January 6, 2007 Posted January 6, 2007 Try CD or HTP for more options at the low end. Quote
ChandlerJane Posted January 6, 2007 Author Posted January 6, 2007 How about LX's? I initially chose Ecos when I was testing a while back because they burned certain resin based oils that other wicks could not burn (they would clog). Quote
topofmurrayhill Posted January 7, 2007 Posted January 7, 2007 How about LX's? I initially chose Ecos when I was testing a while back because they burned certain resin based oils that other wicks could not burn (they would clog).Anything can be worth a try but I think the LXs clog more easily. The reason you get a better result with ECO and those oils is likely the high flame temperature from the paper filaments in the wick. HTP and CD share that design feature. Quote
Gypsyjen Posted January 7, 2007 Posted January 7, 2007 I'd also recommend trying out the Premier 700 series wicks. They have a gazillion sizes but, sadly, they do not provide a burn chart. Quote
ChandlerJane Posted January 8, 2007 Author Posted January 8, 2007 The Premiers clog as well. I tried quite a few, and, come to think of it, the LX's were one of the ones that I tried, that clogged pretty easily.Any ideas for which HTP and CD would correspond to Eco .5 and Eco 1, more or less? Quote
topofmurrayhill Posted January 8, 2007 Posted January 8, 2007 Any ideas for which HTP and CD would correspond to Eco .5 and Eco 1, more or less?Maybe like CD 2/3/4 and HTP 41/52/62. Over at Wicks Unlimited you can use the yield numbers to get a rough idea of the relative sizes. That works pretty well for comparing these wick lines. Quote
ChandlerJane Posted January 8, 2007 Author Posted January 8, 2007 Thank you so much for all your help. I will be pouring some testers today, with some of my more difficult oils, to see if the HTPS and/or the CD's can keep up.Do you know by any chance if either the CD's or the HTP's tend to smoke any less than Ecos, which DO tend to smoke a bit? Quote
topofmurrayhill Posted January 8, 2007 Posted January 8, 2007 There's no wick in my experience that intrinsically tends to smoke. I definitely haven't noticed that with ECO. A wick may smoke in a particular situation, which most of the time means either the wick is too large or there's too much fragrance oil.In a case where most wicks are clogging and ECOs are smoking, I'd suspect a problem with the fragrance concentration. Keep in mind if your wax is rated to hold 8% fragrance, that could easily mean only 5% with certain less compatible FOs. You may not get seepage or anything visible in the wax, but one clue that it's oversaturated is if the flames are reasonably stable but you're seeing smoke regardless of the wick size. You would also usually get wick clogging, especially with the smaller sizes.Be careful because such is situation is a definite fire hazard. Quote
