help with quantity

Recommended Posts

I hope I can explain this....I sell to friends and friends of friends. So my friend got me an order and wants like 1 of each. Example...1 1/2pt. jj in one fo and 1 2 oz jar in another fo. and on and on. I was thinking if I just melt a large amount of wax in my presto and pour out what I need would be the easiet way to go, my question is....how much fo do I add for each order. If I don't measure the 1# wax and the 1.5 FO I'm lost! Can I wiegh the melted wax in the pour pot and go from there? And how much shoould it weigh..melted so that I can adjust the FO. I hope you all know what I'm trying to say here, it doesn't sound real clear to me, but I know what I mean...:D I don't want to make just 1 candle of each FO, I'd make a few of each, but I want to have the wax melted and ready for the next scent. Thanks for any help you can offer....Dee

What I would do is melt quantity in presto. Then put melted wax in pour pot. Tare. Weigh. Add scent/color accordingly. I have eight pour pots just for this purpose. You always have hot wax ready. Also take out a little extra to allow for any repours. You don't want to find out that you didn't have enough after you have colored and scented and then need to do a repour. If you need to do only one candle - use a glass measuring cup. Don't forget to weigh though. 1/2# wax if using 1z per # would be 1/2z fo.

It seems like you're asking how to make smaller quantities and still measure out the right amount of FO. I have an excel spreadsheet that will calculate out the amount of FO needed for any amount of wax you are using. It is a great help for me because it eliminates the need for me to do the math every time I make a candle. You just input the amount of wax you want to use and % of oil you want to use, and it will tell you how many ounces of oil you need. If you want a copy, send me an e-mail :D

I use percentages to determine how much for each jar. I use 8% fragrance in my candles. So for 8 ounces of wax I would use .640 ounces of fragrance. I use a small shot glass type measuring cup that I bought at Michaels. Put it on my scale, tare out the weight of the cup and measure out .640 ounces of fragrance. I melt my container wax in a turkey roaster, weigh my pouring pot on the scale, tare out the weight of the pot and then pour in the amount of wax I need for one scent then add color and fragrance.

Well melted wax weighs the same as it does in slab form, it just takes up a different amount of space. So you can melt loads of wax, and just weigh what you actually use specifically for each candle/scent. If you use the same container to measure in, just zero your scales before you start with that container on it. You can always add more /less wax to get the weight you want.
