LizF
Hello everyone. Wondering if it is okay to heat up (in microwave) a commercial lotion base just to thin it a bit so it goes into tubes/bottles more easily. Specifically, I am concerned about any potential impact on the effectiveness of the preservative that is already in it. Of course, if they may be other problems caused by this, please share! Appreciate any advice you may have...Liz
Rebecca_IA
You really need to contact the supplier and ask them. It depends upon what kind of preservative is used in the lotion. Some of them can't be heated over a certain temperature and if they are, they become ineffective. As long as the preservative can handle it, warming it just enough to thin it out a bit is okay. It will thicken back up.
sudsnwicks
That's right, the preservative will 'die' if you heat if up too much. Do you know what preservative is in your base? If so, you can look up the highest temp at which it can survive. If not, the supplier should be able to give you this info.
KristinesShower
I would never use a microwave to warm up anything - you should always gradually bring things like that to temp. You may kill off the preservative (just like rebecca & suds said)
