mysticglow
The last couple batches of soap that I have made CPOP has come out of the mold with a frosty white layer on top. Is this what I have heard called ash? What causes it? I don't really think that I've done anything different as far as the methods that I'm using. :undecided I am trying a few different recipes. Are there certain oils that cause this? I really don't like the way it looks.
Purple Lilac
I only do CP but this may help explain - if you are refering to "soda ash" (white powder) on the top of your soap it is not harmful, and it will wash right off. Soda ash is formed when oxygen in the air comes in contact with the uncured soap. HTH
cindym
Try spraying it with alcohol and wiping it off.
mysticglow
Thank you. I will try spraying it and see what happens. My first few batches didn't have it. Then all of the sudden they all do. :undecided Weird.
mountainmadness
I am one that likes the ash. I use individual molds and leave the ash on them. In my experience, it does not seem like the oils that cause this but the FO or EO. HTH.

No color or fragrance. :undecided
mountainmadness
That is interesting. I had always thought that it was the scents....I have seen 100% coconut oil soaps before in HI and they had a large amount of ash. All scents, colors, etc. I wonder if it is the oils.... Hmmm. You have me wondering now. How much coconut oil do you use?
mysticglow
85% Olive10% Coconut 5% CastorThat's it plain and simple. The first couple of batches that this happened to did have FO but not this one.

That happens to me sometimes; I just trim them off. Did you have the mold covered while in the oven?e

Did you have the mold covered while in the oven?eI had the lid on it that comes with the upland molds. It kind of looks like little bubbles but they are white and frosty looking. Sort of like the spray snow stuff that you buy at Christmas and spray on your windows for decoration. :undecidedI'll just trim it off and go from there. Maybe the next batch will turn out better. Bunny
Spray it with witch hazel just like you do with MP between layers.. Just spritz it on the top.. Learned this off the dish! It really works! Or put saran wrap directly on the top of soap as it goes through gel...
