Grumpy Girl Posted July 11, 2006 Posted July 11, 2006 Okay, so I ventured into pillars... something I said I'd never do. :rolleyes2I don't plan on ever selling them, I just want to make them for myself and play around with the different properties of the waxes. I got some stuff in from Peaks today, and I planned on making my first one tomorrow. What's a good starting wick for a 3" round mold using 1274? I was thinking maybe a low smoke 21... but I really don't have a clue. Nope, not a one. I have everything but RRD and ECO wicks. Quote
candlesprite7 Posted July 11, 2006 Posted July 11, 2006 Hmmm I usually start with a CD-10 when I first test a Pillar wax... Quote
Meredith_D Posted July 11, 2006 Posted July 11, 2006 Do you have flat ply? I would start with a 27. If you don't have 27 (kinda hard to find), you could try 24 or 30. Quote
Scented Posted July 11, 2006 Posted July 11, 2006 square braids and LXs work too Whooo hoooo!! You're finally gonna try it! Quote
Grumpy Girl Posted July 12, 2006 Author Posted July 12, 2006 Thanks guys, looks like the LX's are going to be perfect. Now I have to figure out how to level the bottoms of these suckers. Quote
topofmurrayhill Posted July 12, 2006 Posted July 12, 2006 Did you get an idea of what size will work? I noticed CandleScience tested this wax and came up with LX 14. I was surprised it was so small. Quote
Grumpy Girl Posted July 12, 2006 Author Posted July 12, 2006 I've actually got a LX 28 in it right now, and it's on the third burn and I think I'm going to have to wick it up one more. I can't imagine using a LX 14 in this. I need to get some flat braid wicking if I want to continue to play with these. Top, how do I get a light snowflake mottle? Is it the luck of the draw or is there more to it? The one I did is mottle heavy using the 1274 and 2 TBS stearic PP. I know I need to read up on these more. Quote
Scented Posted July 12, 2006 Posted July 12, 2006 Couple of pellets of vybar 103 will help cut back on the mottling ... just don't go pouring in a whole lot lol ... maybe see what 8 or 10 gives ya. What flat braids do you want? Speak now or buy your own Quote

Maybe I can get rid of that damn second pour line while I'm at it. Quote
Bunny Posted July 13, 2006 Posted July 13, 2006 Hey Grumpy.. To make sure you don't get a second pour line, don't pour above the inital pour!If you're going for a layered pillar and have to pour above your original line, don't let the candle cool quite as much, as when it cools it'll start to pull away from the mold.Have fun playing!!!
