While making soap yesterday I used an old glass jar to measure the lye. Then about 5 minutes later I took my water and lye outside to mix and all the lye wouldn't come out of the jar, it looked wet and clumpy when I got to pouring the last bit out and it had kind of turned to this wet sweaty Crystal. I tapped the jar and got it out but the wet clumpy stuff wouldn't dissolve. The jar was clean and dry to start so what caused the lye to do this?

Also, I notice if I pour slow holding the jar next to the pitcher, the heat from the lye water gets up into the jar and makes it stick inside the jar.

Happened iwth my first batch! I felt like a total idiot - next time I measured it into two separate paper dixie cups and added contents one at a time.

I learned the same way too...I dont have central A/C at home so my house is a hot box and on humid days when I open the lye bottle it seems to clump in seconds. :undecided In the future, I will probably save soapmaking for the cooler days.

Thanks everyone, yes its very humid here, I really dont want to mix the lye in the house. I worry about the fumes, I did have the lye leaning on the edge of the container as I poured it very slowly, Ill try another way next time
